Solve : doesn't shut down?

Answer» HI,

I was wondering if i could get some help here. I have a laptop that runs on XP Pro. Just recently, i noticed that every time during the shutdown process, windows saves the settings, then close the network connection and finally shutdown.

I don't know why windows just stops at the EVENT of "closing network connection". It SEEMS to me that it hangs or freeze. At first, i left it there overnight THINKING that it should turn off by itself as soon as windows finishes whatever it needs to do. The next morning when i came in, the laptop's still on and windows's still trying to close the connection.

Have I missed anything here? I need your advice here.

Thank you in advance

Lets do some regular maintenence on that machine first if you haven't in awhile:
Right click the C: drive in My Computer and select Properties.
In the first window is disk cleanup...run that.
Then select tools and run both error checking and defrag...both of these might TAKE some time so be patient.

After this update all your anti-malware apps and run the scans.

Post back with the results...Hi Patio,

Thank you for your reply.

I have cleaned up the C-drive and defragmented it. It is still the same.
However it shut down properly after running chkdsk. Then, the problem happens again.

What's the cause behind this? what holds up windows from closing network connection?

In addition, i have disable pretty much every processes at the startup using msconfig. This too doesn't bring any impacts at all.

Thank you in advanceIf you have the time, press Ctrl, Alt, Del and click Task Manager and select the Processes tab.  Write down every running process and post a reply here with the list of processes.  One of us will try to figure out what process might be causing the problem and how to fix it.
