Solve : Double installation XP?

Answer»

Wenn I made a new installation of XP on my HD, I erroneously didn't install it over the old one, but made a second installation on the same partition. On starting my computer I am asked which copy of XP I want to use. I tried to remove the first installation, but found no possibillity. Can anyone help me?You can't have two xp installations on the same partition. It's possible that you MIGHT have one installation, but the boot.ini file has an extra entry in it pointing to the same installation.
What does the boot manager say when it asks you which copy of xp to run? Try both options and see if they actually are different installations. If they are the same, you can edit your boot.ini file to get rid of the extra entry.Quote from: michaewlewis on May 17, 2007, 10:51:48 AM

Indeed something wrong? The point is you said "you can't do this, but if you did...."

You can do this, and there are more ways to solve it than what you posted.I made the suggestion of seeing if they were different installations because it is also possible that the original poster looked at their setup wrong and they actually do have xp installed on two different partitions. If each of the entries in boot.ini went to a different installation, then they would obviously have it installed two times, on different partitions. Then they would need to know which entry to delete and which partition to format.
Are you saying that you can install xp multiple times on one partition?
Also, I am by no means a compendium of all windows information as you seem to be. Forgive me for encroaching on your domain.Quote from: michaewlewis on May 19, 2007, 08:59:57 PM

Let's say I would prefer no information included in a post (or no post) rather than wrong information, which does the original poster no GOOD at all, and ties us up with having to CORRECT it. So correct me, I'm fine with that. I'm sure the original poster is fine with that. What is really useless in a post is for a user to make blank stares and hinting that there is something wrong with someone else's information and not offering the correct information.
btw, I would love to know what additional information you have about the original topic.
Actually, I wasn't hinting. I told you straight up. As the original poster has apparently been abducted by aliens, I would suggest to him that the perfect and foolproof action would be to format the drive and install fresh, just one time. (You can also edit the boot. ini file, and delete the extra installation if it truly is in another DIRECTORY.) As we do not know exactly what he did is his mishap it would be hard to advise him further. As he did this, we know that he can install an operating system, so let's try again the right way. actually, i just posted another THREAD about this. i got a virus, bsod, comp wouldnt start. so i decided to see if installing windows again would work. the installer told me that i already had xp on my system, so i just chose to install it to a directory named windows2. now when i boot up it gives me the choices:

win xp
win xp

worked for me since all i wanted was to get my pictures and other files backed up before formatting and starting all over.

so ya...my pc friend, you have to reinstall XP, but this time delete the partitiion and create another one making it 4000 mb...have funif you want juast a single os w/o erasing the other, try to go to the properties of My Computer, advnced tab, startup and recovery settings then uncheck the list of os.d12o40; he already has 2 installs of XP...are you suggesting a third ? ?

jaydawg; he is looking to remove one install...why re-install ? ?

steelfaith; this will only remove the listing of one of the OS's and not accomplish much...

This thread is accomplishing nothing either since he has not returned.
