|
Answer» How would I go about creating a dual boot for WV and XP??(starting out with only VISTA). What computers can I do it with(Iam wanting to do it with a dell laptop when I get it) How can I make sure that it will work twith the laptop I will buy? And any other FAQ anyone may have on this question. Starting out with Vista installed is "backwards," but doable. Thnaks. Broni- I don't know what that is.Okay - I'm confused - You're quoting me and addressing Broni. What is it that you "don't know what that is?" Or, is that a thanks to me and a "what's a virtual machine" to Broni? If you're asking about virtual machine, Micro$oft Virtual PC is free program: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx It creates virtual (fake) partition, on which you can install any OS, you want. No dual boot needed. You access another OS just from within Windows, like accessing another folder.Quote from: Broni on August 08, 2008, 05:40:32 PM If you're asking about virtual machine, Micro$oft Virtual PC is free program: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx I wolu drather have dual boot. Anmd btw, if I install xp on a vista with a dual boot, will it void my warranty with dell?Quote from: Mr. Google on August 08, 2008, 08:54:38 PM Anmd btw, if I install xp on a vista with a dual boot, will it void my warranty with dell?Technically, I don't know but my sense is that they would try to disclaim any warranty work. My feeling on my wife's dual boot HP is that if I have an HP warranty issue, I'll just do a recovery and let them have it back with just Vista. ACTUALLY, I would get a perverse pleasure out of re-loading the crapware and sending it back to them to deal with. The cleanest solution in this instance if you're concerned about warranty issues would be to make sure the Dell BIOS supports choosing which HDD to boot from. If it does simply buy a new HDD and temporarily disconnect the Vista drive and do a full install of XP on the 2nd drive. This WAY they will not bang heads and you will have far fewer issues with the 2 running side by side. Some applications will run in XP from the Vista drive but it's best to re-install the programs you use the most also on the XP drive... |
