Solve : Duplicate Name on Network?

Answer»

Hello Again,

One more issue to be addressed. A friend of mine messed with my network connections in a failed attempt to get my two PCs to share files.

Now when I boot up I get this message: Windows System Error - Duplicate Name on Network.

My friend isn't COMING back to fix it - in fact I doubt if he even can.

What does this mean and what can I do to fix this error?

Thanks.Try this:

Click Start then right click on My Computer. Choose Properties at the bottom of the drop down menu. This will bring up the system properties window. Click on the Computer Name TAB near the top. Near the bottom you should see a line that says: "To rename this computer or join a DOMAIN, click Change". Click the change button beside of this. Now choose a different name for your computer and click OK. All I see at the top are tabs for General and Shortcut.

You're doing something wrong. Are you sure you're opening the system properties window? Did you right click on my computer and select properties? An alternate method for opening this window is hold down the windows key and press the pause/break button. It looks like this:

You see the computer name tab near the top?

Wait a minute. Those are the properties of the shortcut to my computer. Don't go to the shortcut. OK, used the key entry and I believe it worked.

Thank you...now if I can only address the other anomalies I experience every day...

But I believe the culprit is MSN.exe. It errors every time I SHUT it down and puts out multiple msmmsg PROGRAMS. I'll talk to them (wish me luck).
