Solve : error checking c drive when installing windows?

Answer»

when installing windows on a brand new partition it formats fine but then when it trys to verify it displays this message...

setup was unable to verify drive c:

Your computer may not have enough memory to examine the drives, or your windows cd may contain some corrupted files.

Press ENTER to continue.....

then it stop at the driver.cab file which of COURSE is imprtant and will cause windows not to work.

where can i start.... is it actually my windows memory if i'm using 1 GIG ram or should i just get a new windows cd? I found this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822796well actually i guess i'm only at around 300mb ish ram

but tried different hard drives. it is a brand new mothoboard and old one gave me same problem so the other one p[robly good now too.

ummm psu maybe?
more ram?

graphics card?

sound card? (could this cause it since it does have onboard sound?)
i have fail safe bios settings on.

what you guys suggestions or where would you start? If you've tried difference hard drives, it's possible there is a problem with the Windows Disc.
Can you try another one? (borrow one)What version of Windows are you trying to install?

Is the CD a copy or is it a legitimate version?

Is the CD damaged, scratched...or need a cleaning?i am using a copied cd ..... but this cd has worked on many other computers like 20 installations....

and the cd doesn't matter if it's a burned cd what matter is the cd key..... which btw is valid.

it's not the cd it gotta be something else.....my question is is what hardware part would cause a failure like this.....

my uncle said psu and once he said that i thought it was very logical....
i should have plenty of ram i installed windows xp pro sp2 on machines with 64 mb ram
Did you read Carbon Dudeoxide's previous post from Microsoft?

This problem may occur for one of the following reasons:

• The motherboard of your computer may not be compatible with Windows XP.
• The BIOS of your computer may not be compatible with Windows XP.
• The hard disk you are installing to may be damaged.
• The Windows XP Setup CD may be damaged.
ummm yes i did i troubleshooted the hdd as i said and told you it's not that it's not the cd because there is not a single scratch on it or any dirt and dust and it is a compatible motho board because itsays designed for windows xp....................Just for kicks and giggles...do you have another CD drive you can use to try and install XP?

Call it a hunch, but if it isn't anything related to what we've already recommended...it may, in fact. be the optical drive.Quote

I don't see how the PSU would contribute to this error. The PSU regulates power throughout the computer.
However, we can't pass on anything...well i AGREE to you to a point. although i do think it could have been the cause of why my old motherboard's capacitors were popping out. my uncle was telling me how some ac voltage was coming through when of course computers use DC. yeah I'm stumped.

i really don't think it's the CD I've used it on many computers before.
and i don't think the hard drive either because it performed fine up until i just felt like reinstalling windows.
i was getting some blue screen of death with old mother board and that board internal Grahics wouldn't work.

so i replaced it with this new board which is windows xp compatible.

still gives me same error message as old board though which means it wasn't the board. i am using good ram because it performed properly in other computers.

graphic card is nothing out of the ordinary and never was over clocked a few years old but should be fine never had any problems with it ever!

psu is not a name brand psu (Cheifmax) so i believe it could easily fail.

and CPU should be fine..... and if it makes it that far into installation it's gotta be OK.

the mortarboard i am using has integrated audio but i put a sound card in so better performance in games.
This might be causing compatibility issues if it can't decide which one to use. i guess i will just pop it out and see.Quote

This is probably the issue...whether it's worked in the past or not.
That and the amount of RAM.

Why not add some RAM which is cheap right now and borrow a legit XP CD if you have a legit key ? ?well i'm trying the ram thing right now, but if the cd works with as many installations as it has it shouldn't be the problem. but thank you your probly the best person on here so far you just gave me the straight to the point answear.

(Probly Ram) can't get much simpler then that. Thanks
