Thank you also Geek-9PM,
I see that you are referring to D drive (E drive, etc), this is the case indicated on the Seagate website...the D drive is Matshita on mine but was able to run the Seatools for DOS which found no errors. Quote from: jdavidwik on December 11, 2011, 03:10:36 PM

The Seagate test is reliable.
You may have some hardware issue on the motherboard or BIOS. It may or may not be related to your former problem.

But before you give up, make sure THEE is no software issue. Like maybe a malware that HIDES itself until you are not looking.

A good independent AV is is the Alvira rescue disk. It can work even without a Internet connection.

Download Avira AntiVir Rescue System

No guarantee that it will fix your problem. But it is free.Thank you.

The Avira Rescue scan on All Files stops after scanning 260 files, 81 directories.  Internet connectivity should be possible but Avira indicates that it is not (re. updates). No PROBLEMS (0 infected, warnings, SUSPICIOUS) detected. Is this pointing to a bad/missing partition?Ran Avira rescue scan on Boot Sectors Only. This shows two warnings:
[IO error on file]Master boot sector (disk/dev/sr0)
[Error reading file]Boot sector (/dev/sdal)Any opinions on using the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows- PartedMagic application, as it seems a partition issue might be present.Hello!

If the drive passes it's vendors diagnostic tools, perhaps a repair install of vista might be in order? You can do this via the installation CD.

It will keep your data but reload any system files.
