Answer» Hey everyone. I just did a Reinstall of Windows 98 on my very old laptop Toshiba Tecra 720CDT. I am having this PROBLEM where whenever I try to click the start menu or view the contents of a disk or just about anything else I get the error for EXPLORER saying it has performed an illegal operation. Can anyone help me correct this problem? Is it an illegal copy of Windows?
You may want to start by checking the RAM and the hard drive for errors.

The appropriate drive maker's site for a free download.
What happened requiring the reinstall? Did you format the drive prior to installation?I would love to try out your advice but when I click anything explorer crashes...the only way I can think of solving this is some way through dos...and yes its legal copyThese both creat bootable diskettes (or CD's if you are floppy-less). Windows is not required. If these don't run then you have bigger problems.I just ended up formatting the whole dang thing...nothing on the harddrive anyway. This has taken care of the problem. I just get this annoying MESSAGE before windows loads that says it cannot locate vnetbios.vxd It says strike any key to continue so I do and windows loads. Hmmmm well uninstalling dial up adapters SEEMED to solve this problem...very STRANGE indeed If you need the dial up adapters, you might try going to the manufacturer website, and downloading them from there instead of using the Windows generic drivers
