Solve : Feature in Windows XP to automatically rename files with a duplicate name??

Answer»

Is it possible to set preferences on Windows XP to automatically change duplicate FILE names so that older documents or files don't get overwritten?

I have to copy many files to the same folder and many have the same file name. I only want duplicate files renamed, maybe by adding to the file name so it is still recognizable. Like changing readme.doc to readme(001).doc.

Is it possible, instead of having to waiting for the “This file already exists” dialog and having to OK or disallow the OVERWRITE of a file with the same name, to have Windows GO ahead and complete the transfer but KEEP a renamed copy of the old file?
Thanks,
VernI don't know of any way in XP. Windows 7 handles this more intelligently. You'd need to hook into Explorer. Possibly there's a third party copying app that performs this function, but I don't personally know of one. You may want to look at a 3rd party copy utility. I think TeraCopy has the functionality to RENAME duplicates but I don't think it looks to see which file is older.
