Answer» I'm having trouble loading software - "GIMP", it's an open-source art program.
It hangs up and crashes while loading the fonts.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled.
Have deleted all fonts and tried adding back as best as I could.
Still havin' problems.
I have been advised to delete .fonts.cache-1, but can't find it. It's SUPPOSED to be in my %USERPROFILE% subdirectory, but can't find anything of the sort. The WAY I understood it, though, .fonts.cache-1 should be in my %USERPROFILE% subdir, regardless of the Gimp. If you can't find it there, it isn't there, and you evidently have a different problem. Are you still having the same problem with the latest versions you've downloaded? Troubleshooting that is what led to the Font Cache question. I just looked in the %USERPROFILE% of my other XP SP2 machine, and it's not in that one, either.
Is it the kind of thing I can force Windows to create?Hmm... I wonder if something is preventing The Gimp from creating the font cache, and THAT'S the problem? Have you tried running The Gimp as Administrator?

echo %USERPROFILE%
Incidentally the .fonts.cache-1 is not a Windows-specific file. It will only appear with programs that have been ported from other (typically Linux/BSD) platforms, like The Gimp/GTK.

I mean logged on as "Administrator" (which in XP Home you can only access in safe mode, and in XP Pro you can access any time, depending on your settings).
