Solve : Formatting and Windows XP?

Answer»

Hello all...

My system was dogged by a virus and I tried to reload Windows XP (Home). Part way through it froze. Since then whenever I start up the computer, with the Windows disk, it gets to Window Set Up and says it is loading a lot of files. Then it gives me two options to continue with: To Repair Winos XP or to Set up Windows XP.
I select to set up Win xp and it shows the licence agreement and freezes.
I select the repair option and it just switches off and starts up again.
I want to format the disk and start from scratch if I only can but it won't even GET into Safe mode .
What can I do? Please. what can I do? Do you have access to another computer? If you do you can use an enclosure with the drive and format it through the other computer. I assume XP did format the drive prior to INSTALL and found no bad sectors?Hi Murray,

I have another computer and what you recommend sounds great, now if only I knew how to do it.
What does it mean to "use an enclsure" and how is it done? Please.

I'll try it if I can.

Cheers and Thanks,

EdEdwardC,

The drive can be put into a small box with USB connection.

BTW, thank you for posting this. Other people think I am crazy when I tell them that Windows XP CD can not format a hard that has been subjected to certain kinds of software.
This has been documented my Microsoft. You have to format and or delete the partition by something other than the XP CD.

As Murray said, another PC can do it. The limitation is the XP CD itself can not handle a certain situation.

What if f you can not get an enclosure?
Get a 'Live' CD , Boot it on the sick PC and re format the drive.

And who is BC_Logjammer?Hi Geek-9pm,
Thanks for that information. I don't have an enclosure but now at least I have learnt about it.
I am looking into the Live CD thought but it is So Complicated. I'm struggling to get any real understanding, and, to be honest, I'm worried of downloading anything into this computer in case this one also get affected by something I can't cope with.

Cheers,
EdBy using another computer you can not infect it by wiping the drive. The only way it could become infected is if you tried to run all the programs from that drive on the other computer.
All you need to do is buy an enclosure and then connect it to the computer.
When you can find the drive in 'my computer'.
Follow this
Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools. Double click Computer Management and then click Disk Management in the left hand column.

When all the information comes up showing the disk... right click on it and choose to format.

We can help you after this. Hello Mulreay,

I looked into getting an enclsure at, http://www.techbuy.com.au/searchcat/HARD_DRIVE_-_EXTERNAL_DRIVE_CASE_SATA_-_USB_3.5.asp, and wow! There is such a range. From $33 to over $1000. I'm flabbergasted! it is way beyond my understanding.

I also across a web cite offering Spotmau PowerSuite, http://www.spotmau.com/products/package/full.htm?gclid=CJ2-qpLIuK0CFWdLpgodGHdrnA&ef_id=NkFPA9BhDjgAAEXx:2012 0105092511:s
I wonder if you know anything about it? Is it worth trying and does it live up to the claim that it can Boot up any computer and Fix and install Windows?
It comes for $50 - $70 and I'd hate to waste the money on something that will not do me any good at all.

Cheers,

EdYou can get an enclosure for as little as 10$
Just google HDD enclosure. If you spend more than 40$ then you have paid to much for what you want to do.
I wish I could link you but I'm from the UK and my links are for there. Hi I normally post in the hardware SECTION, When doing a clean install of windows it can delete all information on the hard drive virus's included. this website describes the process and explains the procedure.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-xp/help/setup/install-windows-xp

at the bottom of the page there is 3 more pages to open in the first extra page they left out you have the option to delete the partition from the hard drive you should do this and recreate a new partition which is then formated.

If the computer still won't install a new copy it has a hardware fault like faulty memory or bad sectors on the Hard drive which will need to be fixed before windows can be reloaded.

I hope this of some help

Lisa
I think you can put a partition manager on a USB and boot it.
If the virus does not stop the boot process, then it should work.

Personally, I use Puppy Linux if I have a install or partition problem with a PC. It boots from a USB and can alter both SATA and PATA drives. Not the best choice, but it is simple. GPart is in the puppy tool set.

http://puppylinux.com/flash-puppy.htm
The GPart tool can re size partitions and validate the MBR. But it can RUIN data. But if you just want to prep a drive for XP, it is good enough.
