How to Prepare to Upgrade WINDOWS 95 or Windows 98 to Windows 2000

There is an upgrade provision in Windows 2000. As I recall, this feature nwas not in Windows XP. Windows 2000 will try to load the old programs.

My recomendation is to upgrade to Windows 2000, based on the hardware you are using. Windows 2000 has many of the features found in Windows XP. Specifically, the NTFS files system.

If you decide to install Windows XP sp1, you should consider installing it to another partition and have a dual-boot system. But your disk space is RATHER small for this. Windows XP on the same partition will nnot load the old programs, so you have to keep Windows 95.

A legal original CD of Windows 2000 sells for less taht $20 by resellers.Quote from: Ademil4vic on September 10, 2011, 05:06:49 AM

That computer will run XP I think, but it won't be that nice. That processor should be sufficient.

A complete install of Windows XP takes about 3-3.5GB hard drive space. However, when the installation is complete and Windows is running, there are a NUMBER of unnecessary things you can remove and get it down to about 1.5-2GB. To be honest though, I'd upgrade the hard drive if you have the money. I haven't seen a 10GB drive in years, so I expect that one is quite aged. If you don't want to get a new drive, at the very least start keeping regular backups of anything IMPORTANT (documents, photos, etc.).

ALSO keep in mind the amount of space Windows XP updates are going to take.

I'd suggest putting in a bit more RAM (I'd recommend 512MB, but 256MB will suffice).Quote from: Ademil4vic on September 10, 2011, 05:06:49 AM

Yep, that will run XP just fine.

I'd recommend getting SP3, though.SP3 is available as a free Windows Update.
10GB is rather little for additional programs, though-the windows install already uses about 1.2 GB.
