Solve : Frozen system?

Answer»

Do you have your windows cd?Sure do...you're going to ask me to do a repair install?

Please say no.yes

Why not? A repair should not hurt any of your data. If, by some ILL fortune, it does, you have another hard drive with all of your stuff on it right? The fact that one hard drive works and the other doesn't, makes me suspect that there is someting wrong with your C drive. If it is a virus you may be looking at a clean install. although it could be something simple, like your hard drive's data cable.

give this a look

did you download speedfan?
I own a copy of that.  Repair installs have always ENDED in DISASTER for me...usually meaning I end up having to do a complete install which is a nightmare.  I'm not worried about the data - just the time it takes to reinstall everything and it's never really the way it was.  That's the main - and only - reason I put the OS on another drive but even that didn't work in this case.

No one has the DOS command for a restore?  That is my last hope.  I can't find the damned thing - I put it in a special place because I know I'd need it someday and now I can't find it!

No, I don't have speedfan.  What (and where) is that? Quote from: JJ 3000 on May 16, 2009, 12:24:22 AM

What cant you find? The DOS command that will do a restore on your SYSTEM.  I had it written down and have used it several times in the past.  It's very useful.

I looked up speedfan.  I'm using a server case with six fans so I don't think temp. is a problem. So here's my story...

I put the XP CD in the CD drive but decide to boot off the HD.  It works.  I then clone the C to the D to preserve what's working.

Next day it doesn't work.  C drive stops at the black Windows screen, the D drive stops immediately after that when everything goes blank.

Finally decide to do a repair install as per the info provided.

When I try to do it on the C drive it stalls while inspecting that drive.  So I boot off the D drive and it tells me that there is corruption in the C drive.  So I pull the plug on the C drive and boot XP off the CD drive.

Turns out there is no 'R' option  and I end up doing a full install on the D drive.  My worst nightmare (39 minutes).

I boot up and I get the original screen back with all the original icons!  *censored*

I don't know how long this will last - it is a bit odd (e.g. 45 sec. wait on the mb screen waiting to go into BIOS) - and there is no internet.  Of course tomorrow none of this may work - again.  But until then, this is The Way It Is.

Should I now clone D to C or wait?
So here is my SITUATION:

When I boot up after the XP install following the mb screen I get 3 (count 'em) THREE options under Select Operating System.

All 3 say MS Windows Professional

If I pick Door Nr. 1 I get the blue sky/grass scene reminiscent of when one does a complete install of XP - which I did.

If I pick Door Nr. 2 I go back to the install procedure where I'm waiting with 39 minutes to go.

If I pick Door Nr. 3 I go back to my original screen with all of my old icons.

I want Door Nr. 3.  But how do I get rid of the other two doors?bumpDid you try to change the BOOT.INI file?

This file is responsible for boot sequence. You can delete the other 2 "doors" from the file.

Control panel --> System --> Advanced --> Startup and Recovery Settings

Click on Edit.
