Solve : General Protection Fault possibly windows related?

Answer»

Hello all, im new to the site and not particularly knowledgable when it comes to computer faults.

If anyone could help me out with this I will be very much appreciative.

Last time i went on my laptop I had an update install that I didnt think was important so when i couldn't cancel it I turned my laptop off with out it completing.  the next time i turned my laptop on it loaded up to an error page and it wont LOAD pass this. Its a general protection fault error and this is the message that comes up:

TRAP 0000000D GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT tr=0028 cr0=00000011 cr2=00000000 cr3=00000000 cs:eip=0008:0042C848 ss:esp=0010:0061FDD errcode=820C flags=00010007 CyNoZr IntDis Down TrapDis eax=C2011FFF ebx=004013B0 exc=00001618 edx=534D0040 ds=0010 es=0010 edi=0047164E esi=00051D67 ebp=00061FEF cr0=00000011 fs=0030 gs=0000

I've been told it could be to do with a fault with windows and that i should BOOT the laptop from CDROM and insert the windows CD and chose to repair the software.

The only cd i have is a microsfot works xp one that CAME with my laptop and nothin happens when i insert this.

I know i have chosen to boot it from CDROM correctly as when i insert a full system recovery cd that i have this loads up with the option to perform a full system recovery. however i dont want to do this as i have loads of files etc on my laptop that havent been backed up which i dont want to lose.

Does anyone know how to FIX this error?? Quote

By now, you know, it's very bad thing to do, don't you?
Most likely, you screwed some system files.
Micro$oft Works CD won't help here.
You need Windows XP CD to perform Windows repair.
Borrowed CD will do. It has to have same Service Pack, as the one installed on your computer.
