Answer» My SYSTEM is current hard freezing at random points. No error message, just the screen as it is frozen. If the Hard Drive is working at the time, the light stays on. If not it is off. Only a hard restart FIXES the issue.
Here is what I have done, all have not changed the situation.
It happened in XP so I went to Windows 7.
Upgraded video card
Replaced ram
Changed the connection point for the HD on the Mobo
Changed the power cord connected to the HD
Updated the BIOS
one THING not on your list was a HD surface scan. I recommend it (chkdsk /r)
it takes a few hours, so it might be best to run it overnight. I've seen this type of symptom in my own symptom and in all cases it turned out to be bad/failing sectors on one of my drives.I did do that. Sorry. Forgot to mention it. If it's not the HDD the 2 other most common causes for freezing are memory issues or overheating... For the Memory DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least 2 hours...any ERRORS at all and you have a bad stick of RAM.
For the overheating open a side panel and direct a small fan's airflow into the case...check the housekeeping when you remove the panel and clean as neccessary using a can of compressed air. Use a QTip to hold fan blades in place when blasting them to prevent damage.
You could also DLoad and run SpeedFan and post your TEMPS here...Just put in new ram. Had the issue before and after. I am going to DL that program and post the results. I doubt it is heat as it happens 5 minutes into running the comp checking mail or 4 hours into playing Fallout 3. You just never know. Another thing to try is a different power supply. I noticed that it was not mentioned in the things you've tried.
Alan <>< CPU is a Core 2 Duo E6850.
At 100% for 15 minutes it is topping out at 59c
Normal opp temp is 36-42cQuote from: ale52 on August 09, 2009, 07:44:52 AM Another thing to try is a different power supply. I noticed that it was not mentioned in the things you've tried.

That is a real pain to try, but I might have to. QuoteI doubt it is heat as it happens 5 minutes into running the comp checking mail or 4 hours into playing Fallout 3. You just never know. This does not rule out it being heat....
