Answer»

first off,i know nothing about COMPS apart from switching on and off.my MATE knows less and hes got the problem.every time he goes on net(or trys)all he gets is"cannot find server".its a dell dimension 5000.ithats as much as i know.hes driving me mad ASKING if i can help,so im asking you.byrnieWithout alot more info anything would be pure guesswork at this point...Yes, send your mate here, or get him to TELL you what kind of connection he has to the internet, who his ISP is, has it ever worked, etc, etc.hes on ntl broadband,it was working up to a couple of weeks AGO,hes still has an old dial up connection which he reconected and that worked.byrnieHave you tried ringing NTL customer support?NTL probably supplied a cable modem/router - they also should have provided installation and configuration instructions.  Follow those and follow Neil's suggestion too.i will tell him to give it a go,dont know why he hasnt, cept he wont understand a word they say.thanks for your help..byrnie Quote

I'm not sure how we can do any better than NTL, I'm afraid.  Particularly when then have far more information at their disposal...Try installing another browser, Like firefox you can get it here http://www.getfirefox.com and or opera which can be found here http://www.opera.comthey are both free and if the doesnt work then see if he can recieve and send packets.Maksim, if it says "Cannot find server", the ethernet card has a problem, and therefore both Firefox and Opera won't work either.

Byrnie77, couldn't you get your friend to send the PC to the geek squad?  They should be able to fix that problem.  On my new PC, when I tried to update Norton Internet Security, it fouled up the internet connection when it failed to install properly.  The geek squad was able to fix that problem and get the internet connection working again.  One thing is that it could cost your friend $100.  If that's one of the few ways that it can be done, he may have to do it.Careful...

Which is it?

I don't think anyone needs to start shelling out $100 for something that NTL should fix for free.   Quote
