Answer» SO, I got a computer, about one year old from my BIL, and its got windowsXP home edition, its an eMachine. But it has all kinds of crap on it I don't need. Like porn, downloads, movies, ALL kinds of stuff. How do I get it off?? It didn't come with any disks or anything. What OS do you plan to install on it without any CD's...are you considering Linux or other ? ? To do it properly you will need a Windows CD of the FLAVOR of your choice...You get rid of stuff you don't want by, er, "deleting" it. You can delete porn, movies, that kind of thing quite safely without harming the system. Unwanted games can be uninstalled via the "Add-remove programs" section of Control Panel.
I must say your brother-in-law does not sound like a gentleman if he gave you a computer stuffed with porn. Have you thought of telling your sister?
Its my BIL the other way, My husbands brother All he said was you need to clean this off, very casual. I have deleted the easy to notice ones...but I'm scared I will delete/uninstall something important. Well, there's a LOT I COULD say... but i expect you already thought it yourself... I sympathise. You can safely delete any multimedia material such as video clips, movies, etc that you don't want, and probably most of the stuff that is not under C:\Program Files or C:\Documents and settings. Also empty the recycle bin.
Your husband cannot be a gentleman if he lets his brother insult his wife in that fashion, IMHO.
Use Windows Search for these things (choose advanced options and show hidden files.)
*.mpg *.avi *.wmv *.jpg
and make a judgement on what you find. You may need a strong stomach. Quote from: veggiemamma on September 29, 2007, 11:57:15 AM ... All he said was you need to clean this off, very casual. ...
Very casually ask him for any and all disks, CDs, documention, etc., that came with it when he got it. If at all possible, having the CDs will be greatly to your ADVANTAGE - if not right now, then sometime in the future.
Since it is only a year old, the chances of them being lost are not as great as with an older machine.
Can't hurt to ask......
If not you will eventually need a Windows CD...this is inevitable
