Solve : Help! Computer will not start!?

Hello, my computer recently stopped working. I get the blue screen of death fairly often, but usually I can just restart and the problem is fixed. However, one popped up yesterday, and like usual I try to restart, but when the Windows XP logo comes up (with the little loading bar under it) it loads for a while and then automatically goes to a blue screen every time. Before this, though, it tells me to pick an option out of these: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe mode with command prompt, Last good configuration, and start windows normally. No matter which of these I pick, it ENDS up going to the blue screen no matter what. I can't do anything but get into the setup options by PRESSING F2 and that does me no good.

This is what the blue screen says everytime:

" A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Disable or uninstall any antivirus, disk defragmentation, or backup utilities. Check your HARD drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

And that's it. But I have no clue if I can even do anything it tells me to do since my computer won't start up! Is there any way to fix this? Would I need an XP disk?Disconnect from the internet, disable all anti-virus, anti-spyware programs.

Start>Run, type cmd, enter; type chkdsk c: /f, , enter; this assumes that your system drive is C:, if not, substitute the correct drive for C:.

After chkdsk runs, do a shutdown (not re-boot) wait 15 seconds and power on.

If so, boot from the CD first, and after your computer loads XP setup, then run recovery console...
Select your system drive to be repaired then type chkdsk /f or /r

Keep us posted! The poster may not be able to do that, since he's stuck with BSOD.
That 024 error, may indicate, as you suspect, some bad sectors on HD, or system file corruption.
I'd do two things:
1. Run free diagnostic program available form HD manufacturer site: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
...if HD checks out OK, I'd go for...

Sometimes. Does that mean anything?

Although something I forgot to mention: Usually (most of the time, but oddly sometimes not) a screen will come up before the "last known configuration, start normally, safe mode, etc." page telling me either "The amount of system memory has changed", or "Memory read/write/address failure blah blah blah expecting blah blah blah...decreasing available memory". What does this mean?What kind of beeps (long, short, pattern)? Do you know what BIOS manufacturer you have - Award, AMI, Phoenix, etc? Also, report your motherboard manufacturer and model, or computer make and model.

Did you run the hdd diagnostic? What was the result?

Try to remove and re-seat the computer RAM. Shut down the computer, unplug from wall, and ground yourself before TOUCHING anything inside the computer. If you have more than 1 memory module, leave all but one module out of the system and try to start the computer; if no boot, try again with the other module.

If you are uncomfortable inside the case, download memtest86, create a CD from the .iso file and boot from the CD and run the test. Run at least 4 hours - ANY error means bad RAM. You'll need to remove a module and test separatey to determine which module is defective. http://www.memtest.org/
