Solve : HELP....I think I may have done something very bad?

Answer»

I'm in deep kimche and in need of some serious help, and more than likely will need to take my COMPUTER to a shop.  Here goes:

I'm operating with Windows XP and lately my programs will be running fine then everything just freezes up.  The only way out is to reboot.  This is where I should have stopped and asked for help...but oh no...not me.  I tried to run a SYSTEM restore, and guess what happened...it froze up in the restore proccess. I rebooted and nothing happened.

I put my windows xp disk in and reloaded windows naming in windowsb....now I can get on my computer but no programs work.....nothing, but I have all my files under the old documents and settings.

What can I do to get this fixed?  Take it to the experts?Sounds like you have two installations of Windows on your computer now.  In other words, you have a dual-boot configuration now.  If I'm correct, you should see a screen during startup where you can choose which OS to boot.  Do you see that?  If not, then I'm apparently wrong about the dual-boot scenario.

Do you even see all your programs on your Programs menu now?  Yes it does.  If I pick the one I just loaded it boots up with no problem.  I can see my programs and files if I access C drive and go into documents and settings.  I can open the files but none of the programs  work, nor does my internet explorer.  If I select the old windows XP on start up, I get this error:  sys32\drivers\ntfs.sysSo you have a Windowswsb FOLDER (to which you boot) and an old Windows folder which you can see from explorer, is that correct? If so you have several options:

1) Use the new installation. To access old files you need to take ownership (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421). All programs will have to be reinstalled. Once you are happy that things are running the way you want them, you can delete the old Windows folder.

2) Reformat and start from scratch (first copy all of your files to off disc media using the "take ownership" method described above).

3) Try to repair your original install by booting to the XP CD and repairing the original Windows installation.I would like to try your 3rd option but now I'm stuck in the DOS mode...I think that's what you call it.  All I see is Windows on a black screen.  Can I repair from here?Windows on a black screen?yes
"Yes" isn't what I was looking for. I don't know what "Windows on a black screen" is. What happens when you boot and EXACTLY what do you see?sorry allen....I meant to say i have a black screen with WHITE letters and a prompt that shows

C:\windows>How did this happen? Last report was that you were booting to your new Windows installation. EXACTLY what happened since then?I tried to do option 3 provided earlier by putting my xp windows disk back into the drive and rebooting on the original loaded windows and reparing it.  When I hit the r key it took me into the dos PROGRAM...and now I'm stuck in black and white.  Okay. Wrong "r" key. Type EXIT and press enter and that will reboot. When you reboot to the Windows CD choose the SECOND repair option, not the first.OK...now it is asking for an administrator password....I don't recall setting one upPress ENTER
It takes me back to:

C:\windows>
