Solve : Help, Laptop won't boot?

Answer»

Hello,

I am having trouble with my HPdv9000 laptop. I run Windows Vista Ultimate. Pentium Dual Core Processor, with 2 hard drives

Last night I got a blue screen of death, restarted ran on board diagnostics, came up with driver on my Nvidia Geforce 7600 was not up to date. Otherwise computer ran fine.

Left it on overnight, came out in the morning, noticed the computer had shut off and rebooted on it's own.

So I went to Nvidia's site downloaded and installed the latest driver. Restarted no problems. Did some surfing and had to leave for a couple of HOURS. Closed the lid, left it on, came back screen wouldn't return. I manually turned it off, and then pulled the battery.

It won't boot, I can hear the fans and the drives going, but it won't enter startup. All I get is a blank screen.

Please help!

It is not likely to be a software issue.
That are some reports that say:

That's for sure

Thanks, I plugged it into a spare monitor and was able to boot in safe mode. My images are all distorted with vertical dashed lines through the display. It's beyond me on how to fix it.I did a system restore in safe mode and that is at least letting me use the laptop monitor again. However, now I can't even boot into safe mode. The primary harddrive failed the quick self test.

Any ideas?You need a new HDD...Quote from: patio on December 03, 2009, 06:48:10 AM
You need a new HDD...

That may be part of it but after some more messing with it, I was able to get it almost fully functional again.

Since then it crashed again with Video Card errors. I guess it was fool hard to try and WATCH videos on it.

Anyway, when it was running correctly (earlier today) all aspects of the C: drive worked correctly same with all the programs. The only trouble game when I "put stress" on the video card by running video or CADTrust me if the drive failed even the short test you don't have long before you lose everything...I do agree with you, I'm just saying that I believe it is a COMPOUND problem.

Is there anyway I can save my applications while I still have access with Safe Mode? Any repair or replaceement of the primary hard drive is going to cost me access to software that I don't have the discs or licenses to anymore.No.
Programs cannot simply be copied or transferred to another HDD...they won't work.

You may be out of luck with no installation CD's but you should regardless be backing up your important data immediately...So copying the hard drive is only going to copy my documents pictures etc. that I already have backed up?

I don't have access to applications and programs because the disks were never mine, the software was given to me because the startup I was working for couldn't afford to buy another pc, and so I offered up mine. I came to really like some of those applications, and I would like to find a way to keep them if at all possible.

All of my documents pictures everything, was already backed up on the SECONDARY hard drive. What I want are those applications and their dll files and everything. If there is a way to do that in windows vista that is what would really help me right now.

ThanksNo.
I was stating that an Application/Program cannot be simply copied from 1 drive to another...

You do have the option of "cloning" the old drive to the new drive and everything will be in place...

However that drive needs to run properly for the entire "clone" operation from start to finish otherwise if it is interrupted in the process you could lose everything which is 1 reason i suggested stop using it immediately...I was able to get the drive functioning last night and was attempting the clone, but I didn't have the new hard drive yet so I was trying to do it with a stack of dvd's it took so long I ended up falling asleep and the clone failed.

Any tips on how to get the drive to work properly just one last time?Or the computer working at all. The recovery partion I thought was on the 2nd hard drive. Now though when anything I try fails, all I can try are the BIOS options.

The repair options from the F8 menu don't do anything. Start up repair says there is an error it can't automatically repair. System Restore says there are no points to restore to, Complete PC Restore can't find anything, and that includes the Recovery partion on the 2nd harddrive.

Where do I go from here? I have a new hard drive on the way but without the factory installed OS on it, how do I get it to find and use the recovery partion?

Thanks for any help.Again this is why i suggested NOT using the drive...
Sometimes you only get 1 chance and by you insisting on running a failing HDD you may have hosed all your data...

Other than letting it rest completely til your new drive shows up i don't know how ELSE to sugarcoat things...That's fine, if I lost it, I lost it. What am I supposed to do when the new drive shows up?
