Solve : Help my PC is very slow.? |
|
Answer» I have an HP desktop with windows XP home edition.I also have fast access, but it is ery slow.I've run virus scans, defragmenter and cleaned out EVERYTHING I don't need, but it is still crawling like a snail.Should I reformat it,as I have nothing on it that is important.Which one is slow, computer or internet? The pc is very slow,I checked with ISP provider and they said problem was with my computer.I ran the CCleaner, yahoo antispy, malwarebytes anti malware and unistalled programs I didn't need with the revounistaller and add or remove programs. The pc is around 5 tp 6 yrs. old, would it make it faster if I reformatted it?I even defragmented and cleaned out cookies and internet files.I have nothing important on this pc and was wondering if reformatting it would help.It is an Hp pavillion desktop and works fine, but is slow as a turtle ,or snail.reformatting would help. After 5 years its time. Quote The pc is very slow,I checked with ISP provider and they said problem was with my computerOK, one more time, which one is slow, or both? ISP will ALWAYS say so. Check your speed here: http://www.speedtest.net/ Post results. What's your ISP advertised speed? Please, post some computer info: - processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key) - hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties") - security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)Ok Broni, will get that info early morning for you.ThanksNo problem. You're still not saying, if computer is slow, or the internet is slow, or both...maybe hes not sure My computer is the one that is slow;therfore causing the internet to be slow also.My computer is a HP pavillion 6738,697 MHZ with 256 MB of Ram.I was going to reformatt it,but when I clicked on My Computer then drive C and right clicked on that, all it said was to insert CD for reformatt, and I don't have a startup Cd from HP,so I guess I will have to order one.All I have is a Windows XP home Edition from Dell. Quote with 256 MB of Ram. Herein lies the issue...best and most economical solution is more RAM. Also check to see what amount of Free space you have on that drive.I posted something on my blog at http://mswt.wordpress.com/2009/08/02/hidden-windows-xp-options-to-boost-speed/ and you can make Windows XP faster.I've already done all that you have posted to try and make my PC faster and still slow.I've loated a few recovery disk on ebay, but not sure which one to get.If I get the Windows XP 2000 recovery disk, will that be all I need and will it have all drivers on it.Will I also need that for the # 6738 hp pavillion desktop.I've found a few simular to this #,but it said it was for # 6736 Hp Pavillion. There are many things you could do besides the things you tried i'll give a top ten list 1 disk defragment go to start then accessories then diskdefragment you can see if you need one before you do it by CLICKING the analyze 2 same place in start accesories then disk cleanup I usually check everything 3 go to all of your internet browsers and delete everything mosty just the cookies, will speed it up like internet explorer it's tools then delete browsing history and in there you can delet cookies are whatever you want, I will usually check everything 4 i'm sure you heard this all ready so i'll give you some more try downloading ccleaner this will make it easier to delete your internet cookies and history and it also deletes lots of other things that will speed up your computer make sure you only check the things you want to delete. 5 Ok xp has alot of visual effects that slows it down alot more than you might think this speeded up my computer quit a bit even after i did the stuff above ok to do this go to start all programs left click on my computer then properties then advanced then under performence click on settings then click on adjust for best performece don't worry nothing bad will happen and uncheck everything but your your computer will lose it's settings so your computer will look like windows 95 are 98 but you can change it afterwards but i don't i'll gladly sacrifice fancy looks for some more speed anyday but just going back to the xp look by left clicking on the desktop then properties shouldn't slow it down to much 6 ok now make sure everything on your computer you don't want is deleted this HELPS the computer FIND stuff faster because it has less stuff to look threw 7 ok now some antiviruses with live protection can slow down a computer alot more than you think try avira and turn off live protection also download malwarebytes and superantispyware these are good 8 there are some other things you could try besides antispyware and malware programs like registry cleaners try tweaknow regcleaner and eusing free registry cleaner from CNET you could also download smart defrag from there but with the smart defrag i didn't notice a difference in performence 9 ok go to run type in msconfig and under services and startup uncheck everything you don't want becarefull there are some things in there you want to have for your computer to run properly like in startup i can uncheck with my computer superantispyware avgnt readersl teatimer realschred qttask now in services you could also uncheck alot of things like with mine i can uncheck google updater service windows cardspace java quick starter windows media player n (sucurity center optional but i din't want it) also avira antivir shceduler avira antivir guard google software updater and there are many more i have unchecked make sure you unchech all the things you don't want and not uncheck everything you need some of these things for windows to run properly if you don't know what each thing is google it and it will tell you what it is. 10 now make sure you don't have a bug are virus run multiple scanners like malwarebytes superantispyware avira hijack this run a microsoft scan. a virus can slow down your computer alot and is usually the only reason a computer might be just as slow as it was even after you did all of these. 11 ok 11 in mycomputer left click on c then properties and uncheck indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching this doesn't help for a faster computer and don't compress the disk to save space then click apply then ok 12 in my computer click on tools then folder options then view then uncheck automaticly search for network folders and printers And also this helped me alot more than all the stuff above combined with the internet speed get a different browser besides ie8 like firefox are google chrome i would get opera before google chrome and firefox it's fast has more features than google chrome and i think it's faster than firefox and alot faster than ie8 you should really try the visual effects with an older computer diffenitly if it doesn't have a good graphics card sorry for my bad spelling spellcheck isn't working and I just put this together quickThankyou very much James,I've already done disk defrag, diak cleanup, cookies, browsing history and also have the CCleaner and Malware bytes and ran both of them, but haven't done the my computer and properties,or misconfig things and will chage IE to Opera and see if any better. Thanks,Free some space.... upgrade the your RAM device, hard disk... |
