Answer»

I have an HP laptop computer and its not working properly for me.

Its a dual boot between ubuntu and microsoft xp home edition and I have the same issue whenever I try to access ubuntu or microsoft.

This is what happens when I select Ubuntu..

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

When I try to log into microsoft it just sits at the start-up screen
and then it WONT go anywhere.. I'm not sure whats wrong or what I should do to figure it out. I'm extremely novice when it comes to computers so please be patient : ) I'm also new to this forum so if any more information is needed I'd be more than happy to provide it. I appreciate the help

Melissa 1. HP laptop. What is the make and model number of the laptop?

2. Microsoft Operating System. What service pack level was your Windows XP Home Edition operating at, if known? For example, SP1, SP2, SP3?

3. Microsoft STARTUP Screen. And which screen is this? Is it sitting at the Windows user logon screen? If not, can you describe it with enough detail so we know which screen it is?

4. Dual Boot. Have you been using this dual boot successfully for awhile before the issue occurred?

5. Hardware/SOFTWARE Changes. Any hardware or software changes immediately preceding the "troubles". Have you disconnected and reconnected (reseated) any of the components recently; e.g the hard drive?1. HP Pavilion dv5000, I believe that is what your looking for.

2. I'm not entirely sure. It originally came with Windows XP Home Edition, but then a friend of mine suggested Ubuntu so he switched it to Ubuntu only. After a couple of months he changed it to the dual boot of Ubuntu and Windows.

3. I should say it is the screen right before you enter user name and password. Its the all BLACK screen with the windows logo and it says Microsoft Windows XP. It also has that "time bar" right below it.

4. The dual boot was fine. It wasn't without it's hiccups in the beginning, the very beginning, but once it started to work I didn't have any issues.

5. Prior to the "troubles" there were no hardware or software changes. I was not the last one to use the computer. A member of my family was and the next morning when I attempted to go on that's when I noticed there was a problem. I haven't disconnected or reconnected anything. I've been total that the fix would be a new hard drive, but I don't know for sure.

I do appreciate you taking the time to help. If there is anything else you need, please let me know. Thank youIt does seem to be a hardware issue. After some LIGHT googling it seems to be with your PCI Bridges, meaning the PCI slots where you would put your graphics card, sound card, etc. Im almost certain now that it is a hardware issue. Hope that helps!
