Solve : How big of a hard drive will windows 2000 support??

Answer»

I have windows 2000 server edition and I need to put in a bigger hard drive.  It has an AMD Athlon XP 2000 in it and I was wondering if a 200 GIG hard drive would be too big.  Would a machine that old support such a big hard drive? How old is old! we need a bit more info.the computer was built in 2000Maybe to old for the bios......best thing to do is PAY the motherboard MAKERS a visit! If your BIOS will support 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing) it should be alright.

You may also need to make a REGISTRY modification. 48-Bit LBA Support for ATAPI DISK Drives in Windows 2000

You should have the latest Service Pack installed.(Minimum Service Pack Three)

If all fails then you can simply attach the large hard drive to an add-in Ultra ATA PCI adapter card with a 48-Bit LBA compliant BIOS and controller driver. The adapter card bypasses the system BIOS and operating system's controller driver and uses its own BIOS and controller driver.
