Solve : How do I get rid of name/password prompt for newsgroup access??

Answer»

Howdy All-

Brand new to this site and forum. It contains a wealth of info and I'm glad to have found it. However, after a fairly lengthy search I haven't found the answer to my problem. Or perhaps I didn't recognize it as the answer I need. And I'm not sure if it's even being posted in the right topic because I'm not exactly sure where the problem lies.

About a week ago my ISP went down for about 24hrs. When service was restored I had no trouble logging on and all seemed normal. When I try to access the newsgroups though, I now get prompt screens asking for username and password for newsgroup access. I don't recall this happening before. I haven't got a clue. I don't remember ever setting this up this way. I contacted my ISP tech help and to make a long story short they have no problem accessing the groups thru my account by just using my email addy. They cannot find anything on their end to prevent me from getting in.

I run an older unit with 98SE. I was getting the groups with the email/newsgroup tools in NETSCAPE 7.0., but was not using it for email. I am currently using Net 9.0 as my browser but left 7.0 on the drive just 'cuz. I have since tried three other packages and have the same problem with all(Thunderbird, xnews, ozum). They all WANT names, passwords or some type of authentication for access. I do not have a bios password. I do not have the 'Use password" BOX checked in 7.0 security preferences. I have deleted and rebuilt the account in all the packages I have tried. I do not have passwords encrypted in 7.0 or 9.0. There is nothing listed in password manager for newsgroup access.

This morning I pulled out my "backup" hard drive. It was a copy of what was on my drive from over a year ago. Has a lot less crap on it and doesn't even have Net9.0, just 7.0. DISCONNECTED my current drive, set my backup as master and fired it up. No problems at all until I tried getting to the newsgroups. Up comes name and password prompts. This makes it appear as if it is in the board/bios/? whatever on my computer and NOT in Windows? I'm not savvy enough to know.

I'm at a loss as what to do next. Any and all help will be MUCH appreciated.Your ISP wouldn't be Virginmedia in the UK would it?No, it's located in Arizona.
OK. (Hint: I wanted to know what it is called).
Try re-entering your user name and password info into Netscape again...possibly got corrupted. If it's Time Warner, they have discontinued usenet access. If it isn't, and you told us which ISP it is, maybe we could see if there have been any REPORTS of nntp server faults for that ISP.

Sorry! Don't wish to appear so dense. My access is DSL through my telephone company, Valley Telecom Group. VTC.net

They still provide usenet service, such as it is. As previously stated, a tech accessed my account without problem. However, I may not have been clear earlier in stating that they did not get the prompts that I do. They did not need a separate user name or password. They only required my email addy and password I have with them in order to access. And yes, I have tried that also.

I don't recall ever having done or having to do that when I installed netscape. I checked through Tools/options topics and found nothing. Didn't find anything thru the help topics. I'd be glad to do that if I knew where!
