Solve : how do you backup the OS to CD-Rom??

Answer»

I have a laptop COMPUTER with the OS on a separate partition instead of being on CD-Rom disc. I WANT to reformat C drive and re-install the OS but would like to make a copy first (just in case). I don't recall how to do this and I'm not the original owner of the computer. Thanks It varies from manuf. to manuf....check their site for details or consult the owners manual. You can't backup just OS.

You can create an image of your entire hard drive, FORMAT drive and put the image BACK on clean hard drive.
That image won't fit on CD, or DVD. You need an external hard drive to do it. Quote from: haus_kat on September 28, 2010, 05:27:09 PM

The separate partition you refer to is the Restore Partition.  There's usually a hot key (Ctrl+F11) that allows reformatting and reinstalling the OS without loss of the Restore Partition.
Here's how it work for Dell:  http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/index.htmwhat I meant is how do I make the CD-Rom disc? In the past, many computers came with a copy of the OS on a disc but nowadays they don't (such as in  the case of this laptop) and just have the OS on a partition. Usually there is a way to make a CR-Rom of the OS just to have it. I wanted to do that but can't recall how. On an older computer I have there was some step-by-step program built into the computer detailing how to do it but it's been such a long time that I don't recall how/where to access it (if the laptop even has such a program). The laptop computer is a Compaq Presario V5000.

OS, no, recovery CD, yes, if your Compaq allows it.
