Solve : How to record sound??

Answer» Okay first of let me warn you I don't know MUCH about a computer so I'm here for help. I would like to know first of all how do I know if I have a sound card on my pc that will record my voice? Also tried to record on my husbands laptop but it only would record 2 min. at a time. I need to be able to teach a class and record the lesson on his lap top, how do I do that. And how do I know if I have the same capability on my home computer? If not then what do I need to download onto both his lap top and my home computer to do so?
Thanks!
Summer
Pretty much all you need is a Microphone (newer computers have them built in) and recording software. At school, we used to have podcast lessons and they used Audacity.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Try it out, I think this might be what you're looking for. It has the ability to record for as long as you want, add background music/sound effects and you can cut part out of the recording. What software are you using now, summer?  I'm guessing it's Sound Recorder under Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder.

I wasn't aware it had a time limit (though I've not recorded anything over a minute or one and one-half minutes or so.

I've never used Audacity, but it is an open-source free editing program.  I know people who use it and like it.  It's free, and
you may FIND it HERE if you are interested.

I CLICKED ON YOUR SITE TO DOWNLOAD AND IT NEVER LOADED, WHY??? The website didn't load?

Try here for a direct link to the installation file:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/latest/audacity-win/audacity-win-1.2.6.exeHi Summer,

Very few PCs do not have a sound card that will not record your voice.
I was just doing some voice and music recording the other DAY.  So here is
what you will need.
1) A PC with a sound card.  You already have that I am sure.
2) A good PC Microphone.  I am using one that I bought at Target.  It is made by
GE and is called the PC Microphone.  It was inexpensive too. Less than 10 bucks.
Don't let the low price fool you.  It made a outstanding recording from my voice.
and gave me good sound volume without any background noise or dropouts.
2) A software program that will record your voice for unlimited time.  The Sound
Recorder program that is included with MS Windows is junk.  I downloaded a free
Sound Recorder that WORKS great with no ads or spyware.  You can get it here:
http://www.sound-recorder.biz/free_sound_recorder.html  This program is easy to use
yet has enough user friendly settings to make a good recording.  Did I mention it is
free?  I don't know about you but I like that part.
3) Save it as a .wav or .mp3 file.  Microsoft Media PLAYER on all Windows PCs will play
the file.  You can even do a recording mix for CD sound quality too.

That is about it.  Hope this helps you out.

Carbon's and Aegis' links worked fine for me...
