Answer» Hi, Thank you very much for your help with this topic.
1) When I use the 6 xp start up diskettes, enter into the i386 folder by choosing recovery console
and type format e: FS/ntfs it says "cannot find autofmt.exe" and I am unable to run it.
When I copy autofmt.exe to the first of the 6 xp start up diskettes - it then says it cannot find this file.
2) When I start up using the "xp boot diskette" from instructions from microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305595
and add format.com which I got from searching xp,
It states "bad command or file name" or "incorrect ms dos version"
I need specifc instructions please if you could be so KIND to format a c: partition to be able to restore a image of the c: system paritition and have it boot successfully.
Thank you very much for your help
is this winxp an upgrade disk?>http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/format_XP.htmGo into the i386 folder and run winnt.exe
At the welcome screen hit Enter, then press F8 to ACCEPT the agreement.
Press F3 twice to exit setup.
To format the partition, use the arrow keys to select the partition where you want to install Windows XP.
* Select the NTFS formatting option and press ENTER * Choose Full Format
When the C: drive partition has been formatted re-boot to your restore system and restore the image on your E: (?) drive to the C: drive.
What is the Make and model of your computer?HP Pavilion A320NDo you have this copy of the user's manual, and did you make the recovery CD SET? It might be easier to use those.

Should read
format e: /FS:NTFS
Take a look at this MS KB Article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307881 Not to confuse anyone the format switch is important.
You can custom format FAT32 volumes too (if the program will let you) for example:
A:\>format x: /Z:n
Where x is the drive LETTER /Z is the custom switch and where n = 1 , 2 , 4 , 8 , 16 , 32 or 64 , and where 1 = 512 bytes.
So A:\>format c: /Z:8 would give 4096 byte clusters. (8 x 512)
This is what you get when you use the NTFS format parameters
format c: /FS:NTFSHi, Thank you very much for your support.
I was able to run format from the 6 xp start up diskettes. I copied autofmt.exe to the 1st floppy and when it asked for it, I put the floppy back in and gave it the path.
I ran format c: /fs:ntfs, did a recovery from Image For Dos and rebooted successfully!
Thanks again for the great help. Praise Jesus!
