Solve : How to transfer files between 2 computer via USB cable? |
|
Answer» I have 2 computers, one is DELL notebook (Windows 7), the other is SONY laptop ( Windows XP pro). Please advise how to transfer a file from the DELL's desktop to SONY's folder with a USB cable ( A to A plug). Please show the procedure. Thank you very much indeed. JohnNo, you can' do that. More is needed than just a modified cable. A controller is needed.Computers are USB masters. You can not tie a MASTER to a master. Such a device is a 'smart' cable that behaves like a slave to both computers. The above image is from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com Search for 'USB file transfer' Expect to pay $15 to $25 for such a gadget. The principal advantages of USB are: Faster than most Wi-Fi devices. Easy setup and easy to use. No security issues. Also such devices are found other places. Like Cables to go. http://www.cablestogo.com/ Or try New-egg. My point is that you can not build one. You buy it. A crossover ethernet cable would be way cheaper...It would be cheaper to use a USB memory stick. You don't even need a crossover cable anymore, if you have a fairly new NIC. If you have a gigabit nic, it's new enough. Newer nics have an option called Auto-MDIX (automatic medium-dependent interface crossover). This technology detects whether you need a crossover cable or a straight-through cable, and it automatically configures the network interface card accordingly.GOOD POST Stollin ... Quote You don't even need a crossover cable anymore, if you have a fairly new NIC. If you have a gigabit nic, it's new enough. Newer nics have an option called Auto-MDIX (automatic medium-dependent interface crossover). This technology detects whether you need a crossover cable or a straight-through cable, and it automatically configures the network interface card accordingly. Most people these days have at least a single Cat5 cable, and so a peer-to-peer can be established. However if an external hard drive or USB stick was available for the transfer, that is I feel the best option here due to not having to make any changes to the systems NIC properties. However if one really wanted to do this for FREE without an external drive or storage device to transfer the data between systems and they didnt have a cross over cable, and the systems were new enough to support this feature, it is a valid option. For 2 systems I have between the SYSTEM that is a gaming system and the other system that encodes video files ( chugs through large video files created with FRAPS to record gaming events, and then the other system processes the files from raw 30GB video files down to 1.4GB files ), I use a simple cross over Cat5 cable between 2 x 100MBPS network adapters. This allows me to at any TIME pass a file over to the system that is used for mainly video processing projects and have my gaming system free of this heavy CPU/ Hard Drive Read/write process and able to game without lag while another system is running its CPU and Hard Drive full bore to convert a 30GB file down to 1.4GB.Both PC's would need those newer NIC's...this should be mentioned... |
