Solve : HP 610C "error" in Vista?

Answer»

Connect old HP 610C PRINTER via the usb and parallel cable to notebook running on Windows Vista. The spool file shows the PRINTING as "error".

a) saw a message that the usb is not installed properly in Vista but how do I  install the  usb driver correctly?
b) the usb cable is compatible upto XP and am I right to assume that using on Vista should be ok? (have tried on another pc with XP and able to print).

Kindly help.I don't think you'll be able to use this printer with Vista.  Older printers usually aren't compatible with Vista.  I have an HP 825C color printer that works with XP but not Vista.  There probably isn't a driver for Vista that will work with that printer.  Also, never assume that if something WORKED on XP that it will work on Vista.  Vista is very different from XP.  Quote from: Hu on July 11, 2008, 09:19:18 AM

Connect old HP 610C printer via the usb and parallel cable to notebook running on Windows Vista.

Did you connect (EDIT: both cables) at the same time? If so, no, no, no.

Use USB and look here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00808543&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dlc=en&product=58708

Good luck! That printer does not have Vista drivers...

Sorry.

The referenced HP link in my post says that Vista contains drivers for the 610C which provide basic functionality - is that incorrect? The reference hp website indicates 610C printer driver is provided in Vista.
When manual installing the printer - able to install the printer but when printing the spool file indicates "error"

FOLLOWED the reference hp PROCEDURE of (1) switch on the printer (2) connect the printer parallel port and (3) connect the usb to the notebook. Then the message indicates something like unrecognised or not compatible usb.

Lession learned - if buying usb with printer parallel port cable for vista's use - make sure it is vista certified (certified upto xp may not work with vista).

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I am confused - where does HP say to connect the USB cable AND the parallel cable?

This is what HP says in the link that I provided:

"The driver solution for this product is included in your Windows Vista operating system and is already on your computer. There is no need to download anything . Follow the steps below to quickly and easily get your product working with Windows Vista.
Installing the printer driver

   1.
Verify that the printer is turned on.
   2.
Connect the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable to the printer and to the computer.
   3.
A Your devices are ready to use window might display on the screen. If the window displays and does not close automatically, close the window.
   4.
Print a test page to verify that the printer is working correctly."
