Solve : hp defrag problem?

Answer»

I have a hp w19e computer with WINDOWS XP 2005, and when I click control panel/performance maintainence/Rearrange items on your hard DRIVE to make programs run faster, a red X box pops up with the following message: Disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the VOLUME: HP_PAVILION (C:).  Please run Chkdsk/f.

How do I fix this problem?  I am not very computer savy, so please be as simplistic in your explanation as possible.  Thank you. Right clik the C: drive in My Computer and select Properties...then Tools.
Error checking is what you need .
Let it run to completion without interrupting it and you should be good to go.
Then you can defrag.

This may be what is causing your shutdown issues so you might just kill 2 birds with one stone here...Click Start, then Run, type cmd, and click "Ok". At the prompt in the command window that opens, type:
fsutil dirty query C:
and press "Enter".
Does the result of this indicate the drive is "Dirty"?

Thanks for the help and KUDOS to you.  This actually worked!  I can defrag once again.  It did not resolve my shut-down problem, but it gives me some hope that that problem can be resolved too.  Thanks again.
