Like an idiot I deleted a few files by accident. I used the set up cd to replace NTLDR but now it is asking me for hal.dll which I did not delete. I was not able to add that back. How do I get past the I get the reinstall system32 \hal.dll?where am I running this from? Start/Run sfc /scannow Quote where am I running this from? I don't know...Where are you at ? ? We can't see the machine from here.Where should I be running it from? I tried from the a: prompt after USING a boot disk and from the C: prompt after using windows recovery mode. I have to go out for a while . Thanks Quote QuoteThe sfc/scannow must be ran from inside Windows. Can you get into Safe Mode? Keep pressing F8 as your computer starts up.I can't get into windows. I need to use the set up cd and copy the files I deleted to the C drive. I just need to know what to copy and hope that it works. It's unlikely that it will work. Follow Patio's link for repair installation. You should be able to keep your data files.I don't see any link. Are you saying I can reinstall windows?where am I running this from? will it just install windows and not mess up the othjer files? Quote Repair install of XP Click on "Repair Install" and read that.I am using win xp home on my desktop. I think it may have been windows millenium first. My computer was slow but no viruses or worms. I got a little reckless and deleted ntldr and some of the files from 2003 in my boot directory. it would not boot into windows. I copied ntldr, boot.ini and ntdetect.com back on the c drive. now it says When I boot from the set up CD I am getting: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll please re-install a copy of the above file All that repair install is way over my head for now. Can't I just recopy the files I deleted to the root directory? but I only deleted files from c:\ not from system32 Quote All that repair install is way over my head for now. If you think that simple instruction is over your head, then you are really going to hate learning how to extract files from a CD.I just fixed it myself by searching this site. All I had to do was rebuild the Windows boot.ini Then Windows STARTED, then I restored the files I deleted and replace the new files I created or moved and it is fine. Thanks |
