Solve : I deleted something?

Answer»

:-?  I was trying to restore my hard DRIVE to original.  The Compaq restore disk would not  allow me to do a complete restore.  So....I started deleting stuff on my own.  BIG MISTAKE!!  I must have deleted some important things because now it won't go to the desktop when started.  It just goes to the Windows 98 page & stays there.  I can get into the safe mode & into dos, but don't know if there is a way to recover what I lost.  The system does not detect my d drive now.  Typing some commands in dos have resulted in 'bad command or file name'.  Is there a logical place to begin?

Runner :-/Try to use the system restoration CD once again.  If that does not work, see if you can reinstall Windows 98 SE using a Windows 98 SE CD (they're going cheap on eBay, and you might even know someone who will give their Windows CD to you). Thanks, but I have tried to reinstall windows -- the d drive does not work anymore.Windows might not recognize the drive, but the system restoration CD should, unless, of course, the drive is not RECOGNIZED by the BIOS setup.

Is the system restoration CD bootable?
Did you enter the BIOS setup to see if the CD-ROM or other optical drive is shown there?
If you can still boot to safe mode, try running sfc and check for deleted files. Start/run/sfc click ok. You can also restore the registry to a previous DATE/time from the dos prompt by entering scanreg /restore..The system restoration CD is Not bootable.  I do not know how to get into the BIOS setup - I really don't know what that is.
Can you lead me into that?  Thanks. Quote

Have you tried to boot to safe mode? Do you have a win98 ebd (floppy)?I tried to run sfc from safe mode.  It said setupx.dll was corrupt, restore from D:\win98\
So I put the win98 cd in, but the computer does not read it.  It said the file was not found, verify you have selected the correct 'restore from' location & try again.  I tried again, & I tried looking for it in c drive, no luck.
I then went to dos, scanreg/restore & restored to an earlier date.  I thought that was going to fix everything, but the system still only opens up to the Winows 98 screen & will not go to the desktop.  I went back to safe mode & on desktop is an icon for
Set up the MICROSOFT.  I opened that & it says Windows cannot find program.exe.  It is needed for opening files of type Set up the Microsoft network.  So I put the windows 98 cd in but nothing happens.
When I restart the computer, I can see on one of the dos screens that goes by quickly that it has found my d drive.  But do I need to install the driver?? How do I go about that?? Or am I barking up the wrong tree at this point?  Maybe if I can get the .exe. program back then my drive drive might work again?  I am not a computer wiz.I have a floppy labeled windows 98 start up & diagnosis.  When I put that in to search for the program.exe.,
It says Cannot find file A:\Program.exeYou state that your system restoration CD is not bootable. If it is the disk that came with the computer, it should be. Put the disk in the drive and hold down the Ctrl key while the system boots. It should bring up a boot menu that will have the option to boot from from the CD. Your restoration should then run. Be aware that any data on the HD that you wish to keep should be backed up before you restore. Most factory restoration CD's wipe everything and restore to the way it came from the factory. You should also save any drivers that may be needed.Just a guess,is this systum so old it needs a CD driver on floppy to get you started? SKS
A copied version of Win98 perhaps ? ?Or a CD that is not for that specific machine? We'll have to wait for more info.....It's amazing how all these Windows CD's won't boot...did Gates forget something ? ?
