Get into Linux Quote it has (had win98 (a dellvxxx something.) pII, 96mbram, 8gig hd. Pretty old, then. Bub, you ain't missin' much at all. You can do an install from an upgrade cd but you MUST have a prior version of Windows to make it work. Put the W2k upgrade in the cd / boot to it / when it asks for your prior cd, put it in / after W2k 'likes' it, then put your W2k cd back in and continue with the install. Alan <>< i do have a win98 boot disk. let me exp lain what happened - i was given this pc - a dell v350. old! pII, win98, 96mb ram, 8 gig hd, cd rom. it may have a zip drive. which i know nothing about. (it looks like a floppy drive, but a floppy wont fit.) i removed most of FILES - some - whoever had it before cleaned it up. i installed win2x prof. it did install, but there were some problems, so i formatted the drive, "wiped it". so i got a clean hd - a win98 boot disk- and a win2x UPGRADE cd. what do i do? there is no os to upgrade from!!!! unless i can do magic with the 98 boot disk - i tried - it wont work. thank you. help!!! steveyou will need to borrow/find a Win98 CD to proceed any further... I think an annoying number of people just "shoot from the hip" that is, they read the original post and straight away fire off their 2 cents worth without even READING the replies, often duplicating advice already given and/or making themselves look ridiculous. It is good forum etiquette to READ ALL THE POSTS before diving in. okay - lookit - a full version - you cant "borrow" one , theyre all registered, and an unregistered copy of 98 or 2000 "cheep" is rare. btw - it did take 2000pro before i f$%&ed it up!!! look - its just "too *censored* old". i got all the booklets that came with it new. del. from dell, round rox, texas - 1 dell way. it came with 98, 333mhz pII proc., 64MB ram, 8 gig hd. and p&p devices removed exc. the 56k modem - i'll keep that. the one it came with. the proccessor, hd, and mainboard are of no use. i'll just take the modem and trash it! thanks for the advice guys!!! by the way - i found for 40 bucks a pIII 550mhz dell xps (top of the line!) 256 mbram 40 or 80 gig hd , i forget, and a xp sp2 upgrade cd! i can upgrade my win2xpro on my good pc with it! i got a power spec desktop, celeron 1.4 ghz proc., 512 mb ram, and a tiny 10gig hd. a 40 would be better!) and a dell 15' flatscreen monitor. (no crt here!) 100 bucks used fron a student on c-list. alot of good stuff cheap on there. thanks for the advice steve |
