Answer» Hello again guys and thanks for all the help.
I am advised that I need to add memory to my system.
My PC is a home brew put together by a friend (no longer available) I understand I need a compatible memory chip and I need some help identifing such. I went to Crucial.com and they could not match my mother board, even though it is a recognized BRAND( purchased from Tiger Direct) Also 4allmemory.com had the same problem. Can you advise me on how to get the right product. My system specs are below.
I've tried to look up the Mother board listed but can't get it to match up.
Also, is this installation easy enough for me to attempt myself. I saw a demo online.
Thanks Bucx

One option available is to take a stick of ram out and have the guy at your local store match it for you. Removing and installing the ram is probably the easiest of upgrades you can perform. HANDLE the ram by the edges and touch the metal case before touching any components inside.....Try not to work on a RUG or carpet to avoid static....Don't carry it like a chocolate bar....only the edges....there's also Everest, http://www.lavalys.com/Not sure why this would not show up on crucial's site... Did you run the online scanner ? ?System Model P4X400-8235

I used the recommended sight and came up with the following info.
In the Tips it mentions mixing module speed. The scan did not show my speed. Do I need it?
Also it shows max. memory per system 768MB. Does this mean I can only add 512MB?( I wanted to end up with 1GB)
Can I just add a module to the 256MB module I now have, or do I need to remove it?
Your recommendations are held in high regard.
Thank again

MEMORY-UP Tips
What if I want to mix different memory together?
Different sizes/speeds of memory can be used together as long as their SPECIFICATION are qualified by the systems. For instance, a laptop can use one 256MB and one 1GB of memory for the total of 1.25GB system memory.
(Mixing two different speeds of memory modules would result the system to run at the speed of the slower memory between the two modules. We recommend users to use our Memory Finder or Memory Scanner to find the correct memory for your system.)

Just be sure it's DDR PC2700 or DDR PC3200, not DDR-2
BTW, DDR memory modules are about 3x the price of DDR-2.what about the max 768MB in the system scan, is that set in stone?only way to know is to try.
If it is the limit though, you cannot change it.Quote from: Computer_Commando on July 25, 2009, 02:50:31 PM You already have 1-256MB, you can add: 1 or 2-256MB 1 or 2-512MB 1 or 2-1024MB (1GB)

Safest approach here is to get modules no larger than 256MB. If the maximum memory the system supports is 768MB, with 3 slots, each slot may only support up to 256MB. Thanks a load guys,
One more question b4 I orded these babys.
The product list of MEMORY-UP lists 256MB - 333 Mhz and 256MB- 400 Mhz.
It also mentions mixing speeds in the tips section.
The scan doesn't show my speed now. Do I need to know it and which do I order?
bucxSo, you don't know whether your existing 256MB is PC2700 or PC3200, right? As the tips section said, you can mix the two speeds but the system will run at the slower speed, i.e. at the speed of the PC2700 memory.I just ordered a IGB memory stick from MEMORY-UP. The guy in tech support said one slot would handle it and my system would handle it. When it arrives I will attempt install myself, Gulp.
Many thanks to everyone who assisted this inexperienced operator in arriving at a solution.
Karnac , patio, soybean , BC_programmer , Computer_Commando, you are all GREAT. thanks so much. $35 for 1GB is a decent price for DDR-3200. One of my P4's uses the same type. I have 4 slots and it supports Dual Channel. I got 2 1-GB for $70.
Today, NewEgg has 2-1GB DDR-3200 PNY's for $40 after $20 rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178101
Too bad you missed it, always check NewEgg first.
