How big is the hard drive and how much free space is left?

What are you using for malware protection?

thanks for reply...Ok you could try running the computer in safe mode and doing a few virus scans

While still in safe mode run some spyware scans

And you could also try a registry cleaner...

For a real improved prformance try getting more ram just becareful there are several different types SD RAM, DDR RAM usually with two notches, one close to the center and one further to the side.
These are the physical differences, I belive DDR is faster but I am not sure, I know that SD ram is found in older computers more often so I am guessing DDR is better. but dont worry about which is better, worry about what slot/s you have on your motherboard.

You could also try a new CPU?:
The Central Processing UNIT (CPU) is responsible for interpreting and executing most of the commands from the computer's hardware and software. It is often called the "brains" of the computer.

thanks...I don't think you need a new CPU if you have a 2.66 GHz unit. The memory is a bit on the small side, but that WOULD not explain the 8 minute boot.

I would suspect either a failing hard drive or CPU cache turned off in the BIOS.

That was so helpful of you, Spero-T, to tell us that the CPU is the "brains" of a computer. I always thought it was the "lungs". Thanks for putting me right!

I was just leaving a small definition to help inexperienced users.....

If you find it offensive to your seemingly incredible knowledge and cocky attitude towards computers then you should pm regarding it and not clutter up the help forums...

Steady on, OLD boy, ease up on the attitude, OK?

Not a problem tuyan come back anytime !let us not digress from the main topic of this discussion, according to your sys.specs, i would advise you to add more random access memory, aka. RAM. however, i don't think a 2.66GHZ 256mb computer should take THAT long to load.

open run : type msconfig > and check out your start up items, try unchecking a few of those.

and also, follow GX1man's instructions about running protection programs. It could well be a virus which is causing your computer to slow down..
