Solve : icon problem?

Answer»

Hi everyone I need some help if possible..

Ok here goes,my desktop icons were normal, I ran an AVG 8 scan and when I turned it on the next day all my program and game desktop icons (and ones in the desktop folders) have a square in front of them as per the pic of my FF icon I can move a problem icon to the quick launch then the square disappears, they are normal in the installation folders and the start menu, I tried to change the icon but the square remains, tried making another from the installation folders but the same thing...the programs work fine also I tried system restore but didnt fix it and followed another person's suggestion of deleting the IconCache.db file but still the same

Im using Vista Home Premium

any help would be great

thank youI'm no expert mate but it seems that your system cannot recognise the correct driver for the programme. have you updated your drivers? That box to me usually means that the system does not know which programme to use to open the file. Like I say I'm know expert so may be wait for one of the gifted to respond. Thanks for the reply Mulreay, do you know the specific driver so I can go update it manually....I have the latest MS updates and the only thing I seen in the device manager was a warning next to the 6TO4 adapter Can you give me your full system specs and I'll have a look around for you mate. From John Bartlett:

The System File Checker is an important application which scans the integrity of all the protected system files on your PC. Should it locate an incorrect version of a specific protected file SFC automatically replaces it with the correct Microsoft version.

To check your Windows protected files, proceed as follows:

1/ CLICK the Start button

2/ From the Start Menu, Click All programs followed by Accessories

3/ In the Accessories menu, Right Click on the Command Prompt option

4/ From the drop down menu that appears, Click on the 'Run as administrator' option

5/ If you have the User Account Control (UAC) enabled you will be asked for authorisation prior to the command prompt opening. You may simply need to press the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password etc.

6/ In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow and then press Enter

7/ A message will appear stating that 'the system scan will begin'

8/ Be PATIENT because the scan may take some time

9/ If any files require replacing SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Vista DVD for this process to continue

10/ If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"

11/ After the scan has completed, Close the command prompt window
