Solve : IE resize handles hidden!?

Answer»

I have been searching for information on this, but anything I can find is way over my head. What I ran into recently is that I noticed that unlike all other windows, my IE windows on this particular computer are not showing a resize handle when the mouse pointer is at the edge of the IE window. (It looks like the "horizontal rule" symbol above this text field, eg.: <-->.) This change happened fairly recently, I think, though I am not absolutely sure. None of my several other computers* do this.

*I have a small home based business.

Neither my wife or I have any idea what could have caused this change in behavior. I assume it might be some leftover from some site we've been on? It "bugs" me, as it makes it somewhat harder to SELECT the right position to grab an IE window edge, such as for resizing on just one side.

Does anyone know of a reasaonably easy way to correct this that doesn't require knowledge to write code, etc?

FWIW, I am running IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.080814-1233.

Thanks!

other then the change of behaviour, does the window look any different? As far as I can tell, the window otherwise looks normal / as always. And I assume it's only IE windows?

your quite right to be vexed by this though, it is most unusual.

I'll do some searching and test with my version of IE6, see if I can reproduce the problem and give you a solution.

It's likely some registry key got flipped.

But- I STARTED IE6 on my machine, and I personally found that the cursor needed to be in a one-pixel wide area in order to become the Double-headed resize arrow. Do you simply not get the double-sized cursor arrow? What about the statusbar Grip handle- does that work?Hi, BC,

I retried VERY carefully. Same thing: I can grab any edge of the IE window, and move it (the edge), but no double arrow shows up. The STATUS bar can be grabbed more easily, of course, and the window moved as usual, but no "handle" there, either. The same thing happens with my Juno software (which essentially functions off IE also, I believe.)

All other programs windows (that I have tried) seem to be functioning normally. In Notepad, for example, the cursor becomes a normal pointer arrow as I approach the border of the window from inside the window (text field), closely. Then when I am right over the border, the usual double arrow handle displays, and then once I am outside the window (on the desktop, in this case), the normal mouse pointer reappears.

The number of windows open, etc., appears to have no effect, and time (how long I am "on the border") has no effect either.

This really is a weird one. I suppose I could reload IE 6.0 - I haven't even checked yet to see if MS still makes it available? (I don't really care for the GUI of 7.0, as it exists on our laptop...)

Thanks! My advise: move up to IE 7

As well as Soybeans suggestion; double-check the settings in Appearance->advanced for the window border, and try increasing it a bit.

As far as keeping IE6, I'm not sure but I believe MS has a few service releases/windows updates, if you haven't installed them.Is IE maximized, when you try?Quote from: Broni on January 13, 2009, 11:14:32 PM
Is IE maximized, when you try?

No, this is the normal "restore down" window (about 1/2 of the screen.) This only happens on IE.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 13, 2009, 12:51:31 PM

Are you suggesting the Appearance -> Advanced menu in Desktop Properties? That makes the borders wider, but the handles still do not appear.

I pretty much keep up with the updates. I just checked again at the MS Update site - the only thing they recommend for this machine is XP SP3, and IE7, both of which I am trying to AVOID... (More to bog it down, and, we have IE7 on our laptop: In terms of using it, I think MS went backwards with IE7...)

Anyway, thanks. Maybe I'll try a couple more / other forums.
