Solve : Internet connection indicator intermittent?

A desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate.
Dial up net connection in notification area is two monitors with a RED X when not connected and a blue globe when connected.
Sometimes the red x remains EVEN THOUGH I am connected.
Now I am aware this is probably just a jiff and doesn't MEAN much but I'd like to fix it.
Any suggestions APPRECIATED.
