Solve : Internet Explorer flash appearance?

Answer»

Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop
Windows 7
Two issues: yesterday I could not open Norton 360 and could not access internet with IE - don't know why/how that HAPPENED - chatted with Norton tech and he fixed the N360 problem - but he had no idea why I could not open IE. Symptom: clicking the IE icon merely produces a very BRIEF flash of what might be the internet, but then disappears. Right now, I'm using Chrome to get on the internet, but sense that something is wrong if I cannot access the 'net via IE. I went to the Microsoft site, described the flash phenom, received a reply with directions I'm unable to understand. I wonder why the two problems appeared at the same time. I have done a full N360 scan and a full Malwarebytes scan. Still cannot get to the 'net via IE. Any insights are greatly appreciated.Quote

Question
IE does not WORK

Reply
a flash of something on the screen

Typically is an indication of interference by other programs. What changed?

To test the scope of the problem see if you can change the symptom, e.g. make a window open and stay open, by Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter:)

iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff

In any case it would be a good idea to USE Task Manager to verify that there are not already any iexplore.exe tasks running. Try killing them if so.

Try reinstalling your IE browser. On the first day, I went to the list of optional Windows Updates, noted that there was an IE9 available (Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based systems 36.7MB) I checked that box, began the install, and it failed. Four times.Just an update on this: yesterday, in my Windows Update, I saw that IE10 was one of the updates. Went through the normal procedure for installing updates. Presto! IE10 was installed without a hitch. IE works fine, no flash. Previously, I had tried to install IE9, but with no success and that bloody flash just kept living in the laptop. Anyway, I don't know what to make of the whole episode, but I'm glad I didn't rush to the computer repair shop. Thanks for the RESPONSES that were given here.
