Solve : Internet Sharing Connection? |
|
Answer» I want to connect two computers together to share the same internet connection. Can I use the Internet Sharing Connection Wizard installed on the computer or will this give me trouble? And will I need a patch cable? or if not what type of cable do I need? And can you do internet sharing with a 95 and a 98 computer both with using a dial up modem? Would appreciate anyone's help. Thanks cat5 cable router...unless the pc are near...nic cards more can be learned here>http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/netgeneral/I have another question as well and didn't want to start another thread. I am trying to install all the necessary protection downloads to windows 95 computer. Tried to install spybot search and destroy and it said: file WS2_32.DLL was not found. I went to microsoft.com and found a download for this file but it was for windows 2000 and ME and NT 4.0, I don't think this will work on windows 95. Anyone know where this link would be? I also want to install Ad aware and some sort of Anti-virus, if there are any suggestion please reply. Thanks One way would be to copy the file from your Windows 98 computer, but it might not be 95 compatable... it is getting on in years. Have you considered upgrading the 95 computer to 98? Or possible both to a later OS?The file, WS2_32.DLL is part of winsock 2. Go here and see if this helps.http://www.finaldownload.com/products/win95.html or put win98 on both pc you are allowed to do this....as long as they are in the same DOMAIN...Thanks for your help. I'm in the process of downloading the windows socket 2 update. As for putting windows 98 on this computer, We do want to update but don't have the 98 installation cd, are you telling me you can copy the 98 file from the other computer and put on this one . If so, can I get step by step instructions. You all are so smart. Thanks As for the networking answer' I'm still trying to figure out. Thanks If I'm not MAKING since it's because I don't know much about computers but I'm slowly, slowly learning.Simply copying the file from a 98 machine will not work as there are other FACTORS involved.Where is your Windows CD? Never lose it, lend it, hurt it, shout at it, let it out of your sight. Transfering the file is a little bit more complicated. Warning: the file may not be compatable with Windows 95 (that might explain why it isn't there) so do this at your own risk Go so start > find > files or folders and search for WS2_32.DLL When you find it, stop the search (no point going on) right click it, copy and insert a floppy disk. Paste it onto a floppy disk. If you have difficulty seeing the file (even if you saw it in find) then go to view > folder options > view (again) and show all files. All your system files will now be displayed. Warning: system files are hidden for a REASON. Don't play with them. Afterwards, you might want to hide them again to prevnt accidents. Put the floppy on the other computer and copy the file. If it's not there, read above. Now go to your harddrive, windows, system folder and paste it there. Note: there are two system folders, "system" and "system32". On my computer, the file is in the normal system folder (not system32) so try there first. If the file already exists, then do not replace. Tell me and I will give you instructions on how to back it up, unless you know yourself. (You just basically move the old one out first and put the new one in, but it's vital you backup in an organised fasion.) Then it would probably be a good idea to restart your computer. See if it works then. If it fails to work Windows properly for some reason, simply boot into Safe Mode, delete WS2_32.DLL (NOTHING ELSE and, if nessisary, restore the old backup file (ie by moving the old one back in). Since they both have the same file name, it's important you keep your backups organised and seperate! I hope this helps.Oh, that sounds scary, it may take me a couple of days to get my nerves up to do this. Or maybe I will just tell my husband to buy windows 98SE, I think it may be easier. If I decide to do it I will look for your help I know I will need it. I don't have the 98 cd, because a friend of ours gave us our computer and didn't give us the cd and now, let's just say he can't be reached. Thank you very much. Quote Or maybe I will just tell my husband to buy windows 98SE. I think that would be best all-round. Then you'd have two computers linked with the same operating system and a disk to fall back on when things go wrong. You could try buying another operating system, like Windows 2000, XP (don't use ME) or you could stick with what you know (probably best... if you've got no reason to upgrade, why risk it?) I went to finaldownloads and downloaded spyware free scan and after I installed it I tried to run and it says: The procedure entry point varnot could not be located in the dynamic link library oleaut 32.dll. What in the world does this mean. I'm beginning to think that this computer does not have any of the 95 updates from the last few years microsoft put up. Is there a way I can just download all the windows 95 updates and it will spit out the ones I already have or replace them with another. If so could I get a link or a name to look for a link on microsoft.com. Once again thank you.I went to microsoft.com and downloaded dcom95 and I'm still having the same problem. Is there something else I need to download with this? I'm just trying to get spybot installed so my husband can use until we get windows98. Please reply if anyone has any suggestions. Thanksyou can save TIME and trouble excuse the pun if you used the win98 as the server..and the win95 as the host...therefore you will not need the winsock file but you can still have the anti-virus etc as a safe guard....the win98 server will do it all...via a router..which many now contain a hardwall and two networks cardsand cat 5 cables..just some ideas... Thank you Merlin_2, I finally got spybot search and destroy to work. I am in the process of trying to do internet connection sharing and I'm almost there. Kind of confusing. I already set up sharing on windows 98 and now I trying to set up the the other one. But I may have to do the 98 computer over because setup did not create a configuration disk for the other computer. |
