Solve : internet+sound gone?

Answer» ONY my WinXP laptop, I was having trouble with my wireless PCMCIA card, it just wouldn't connect to the net. searching through a few properties, i DISCOVERED that the Windows Firewall was not running and would not run. i looked for the volume control and there was none. i tried running sndvol32 and it SAID there were no devices available.

Model: Dell Latitude... other than that i don't know. it's a pentium 3 866mhz one, if that HELPS.
Windows XP Service pack 2
AGP ATI Mobility 128 4X
ESS Maestro sound drivers

Protection:
McCafee Antivirus
Peerguardian 2

anything else, just ask
When did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software / checked Device Manager for all hardware showing OK ?

started happening overnight/always worked right/nothing new/Device Manager shows nothing wrongCan you do a system restore to a prior date?

Alan <>< Press F2 when you see the Dell logo or look on the bottom of the laptop for the Service Tag number. Post it here and we can see what components, etc. are involved.ok update, i restarted and everything was better (typical windows). this looks like a memory or hard DRIVE fault (when i restarted, a little while after everything got itself together it BSODed and i had to restart) and it also keeps telling me to check the hard drives for consistency around a quarter of the times i start it up. i;'ll have a look at it later.DLoad and run the manuf. diagnostics on that HDD.
