Solve : IRQL_not_less_or _equal Blue screen?

Answer»

I got this screen today when I was running the Search function. It said windows had shut down and there was a "memory dump"
I restarted my computer and all seems OK, but I wonder why it did this. I have noticed lately that my computer just doesn't seem to have as much power as it used to. It bogs when running too many things. It's several years old, but the hard drives are not even a year old yet.
I Googled the IRQL thing and some posts are saying it could be device drivers or bad memory sticks.
  Any ideas?

The log is clean.
Two main suspects for that error:
- overheating
- bad RAMAlso, what driver or file was mentioned?
Usually it will tell you which file caused the problem. I don't remember what it said. If it happens again I'll write it down.
Does memory just go bad over time?
When it happened, the computer had not been turned on very long so I don't think it could have been overheating. Could the problem be from all the other times it got hot in the past?

I think I will replace the memory. I see a large difference in prices. Best buy wanted 150.00 ea! I was expecting it to be about 50-75 dollars ea.  Is there that much difference in quality?
JimLet 'Crucial Memory'  do a scan and see what the memory costs.

RAM can go bad any time.

Processor heats up in a matter of seconds.
Get Speedfan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php to check on your temps. Post them back here.

Before you do anything, get Memtest.
Download: http://www.memtest.org/

Correct Crucial isn't a must buy but,a very good site to find the right
memory.I should mention that more often. Thanks for the imput Broni.  Good morning,
Before comming here today I already reinstalled my original memory sticks. 512mb ea. To satisfy my own curiosity I am willing to put the new ones back in and test when I get time, but I'm at WORK so that has to wait. The memtest thing seems a little scary. They say to download and write it to a cd then boot from the cd?
I've never done that so I don't know what to expect.
I did get the Speed Fan and ran it. It says:
    HD.0  37c.
    HD.1  30c.
Core  49.c  ( once it was at 50.c) And a little red fire thing comming on and off.
  Thanks,
JimDon't worry, memtest won't break anything.

As for your temps, are they from when computer is idle?
What type of processor is it? Hold Windows key, and press Pause/Break key to find out. The computer was pretty much idle I guess. Should I load it down somehow?
 Temps right now are:
    HD0  39c
    HD1  34c
  Core   51c
It has  AMD Turion 64 Mobil Processor ML-40 2.2 GHz (windows key pause/break didn't work but I never took the stickers off!)

For the Memtest thing. They say to write that boot disk and leave it in the drive and shut down/boot from the disk. What stops the computer from booting up normally?
JimMax temp for your processor is listed at 95C, so you should be OK.

Boot sequence in BIOS. If floppy drive is listed first, this is where your computer will want to boot from, first. Thanks Broni,
When I get the chance, I'll try the Memtest, (mostly for my own education).Your patience with us nongeeks is much appreciated.

That's what counts the most Hey Broni,
Some time has passed now, I hope you remember this. I still have the "SpeedFan" and have been watching my temps. Right now the core is at 54c, but it goes way up when my machine has to work hard. I just installed an RC flight simulator by Realflight.(G4). The core was at 90c for about 10 minutes. I tilted it up to listen to the fan, and it was running, but then my computer just shut down completely.
I assume that's too hot. Does the CPU or whatever need REPLACING? Can that be done in a laptop, or is it worth it?
I haven't ever cleaned the inside but I don't think the airway is clogged up. If the fan is running and it overheats, what can I do?
