I recently purchased a laptop off of ebay. I was told that this has 700 MHZ of speed. This laptop did not come with an operating system. I loaded windows 98 and then upgraded to windows XP. After I had everything running I checked the speed, and it says there is only 497 MHZ. I dont want to contact the seller if this really is not a PROBLEM. I was wondering if when you load an upgrade cd or an operating system, if it is normal to lose speed, or if this just did not have the amount of speed stated in the first place? :-? :-? L400 doesn't say much. Is there a 5-6 digit SERVICE tag attached to your machine? What is it?

You can also get the info from the BIOS (F2 at boot) in the lower right corner.

We will be able to tell for sure what's in there with that info.

The Latitude L400 came with a Pentium MOBILE processor. You could be getting a reading when it cycles down for light use on batteries. It has a 100 Mhz bus, so that makes it a Pentium 500 or so processor. I have an IBM Thinkpad with a 700 Mhz processor that gets read as a 550 at times.

XP has speed step technology built in. Google for the term to learn more.The Dell Latitude L400 is a 733Mhz machine. A manual is available [highlight]here[/highlight].I am posting from my desktop COMPUTER.

The bottom says model no. pp01s.
When I booted the computer to bios it did say 700 MHZ, so I guess the system information has just been reading wrong?

I googled the term, speedstep technology and it said that the processor loses speed when ran on a battery, so that must have been why it was reading lower.
