Solve : Is it software? or hardware? or infection? or....??

Answer»

I've got a Vaio w/ MCE that has pretty much taken a dump for several reasons, just not sure how to prioritize fixing the problems. Here is a summary:

1. C:\ had less than 300MB free space; I've managed to get that up to almost 900MB but know I need more room for OS to load/run properly
2. machine is now going to BSOD (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON-PAGED_AREA) every time I do a Normal startup and try to log in; does physical memory dump
3. machine will start in Safe Mode and let me log in, but I can't get to Add/Remove Programs to pull out more apps to try and free up more room.
4. was also getting other BSOD message about a problem with ntfs.sys; does physical memory dump

What can I do in Safe Mode to try and salvage this thing? What info can I provide to help determine the prioritization of the troubleshooting? Appreciate your thoughts....What Operating System do you have?Windows Media Centre Edition.....MCE.

If that HDD is any larger than about 70G then you still have alot of housekeeping to do.

Your Free Space should be about 15% of the drive size...thank you Quote from: patio on June 28, 2009, 06:40:08 AM

While in Safe Mode...

1. Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
Vista users You may need to copy .dmp files, paste them into some other folder, or desktop, and zip them there.

2. Download HijackThis (use Safe Mode with Networking, or download it on another computer):
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to FIX anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as AdministratorHJT log FOLLOWS, Minidump files in attached .zip. Thank you.

Almost forgot, the original HDD (C:\) is 15GB(!). I had added a 175GB and basically tried to load everything on there, leaving the root for the OS and all the stuff that just doesn't run right if it isn't on the root drive. Looks like the laws of "bloated MS code" may have finally caught up with me...

[attachment deleted by admin]Your low hard drive free space may be the main issue here, but if anything else, dmp files may INDICATE some RAM problem.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.
If you have only one RAM stick installed...
