Solve : Keep Loosing sound after restart?

Answer»

I bought a computer from a state surplus site so no OS was installed. I installed XP-SP2, went ahead to install all drivers/updates but my sound just won't work. I finally did manage to get it working one night when I downloaded a chipset update I believe it was, but turned it on the NEXT morning and all was back to normal, sound didn't work... I am bugging out about this because I got it to work and now it won't.

This is my second install of Windows, the first time I dowloaded all my drivers, ect. except for the chipset update. I coulda sworn it was after the chipset dowload that I got my sound working, then stopped after I restarted my computer.

So I uninstalled the sound driver, rebooted and installed. No luck. Uninstalled and reinstalled w/o rebooting, no luck.

Now I've dowloaded so much crap because I'm using the Intel site AND Gateway to get my driver info I decided to wipe the computer and start from scratch using a method from the Intel site: Disable sound in BIOS load all my drivers (chipsets first) then enable sounds and load that driver...and no luck still.

I then installed SP3 and I reinstalled my sound driver. As I was shutting down for the reboot I heard the Windows outro muisic, booted up and didn't have sound once again.

Uninstalled, reinstalled and I have sound again. I haven't rebooted yet, and everything still works. Only thing I don't see is the mixer controls, which I assume goes in my tray after the reboot.

So it must be somewhere in the rebooting of the system that THINGS get messed up, and that's about where my computer knowledge stops

Anyone experience something like this before? Thanks in advance!

can you goto your device manager and select it and show what type of device is for sound, also select start/programs/acces/system tools/system info and expand on componets sound device(as I recall) and list here...thanks...Quote from: fgdn17 on November 28, 2008, 09:41:36 PM

I believe, your on-board sound chip is dying. You may need real sound card (start @$15)Ok, well not a terrible loss; I'll just throw that on my Christmas Lst.

Once I put a sound card in my system should run off of that and shouldn't have any problems stemming from the onboard? Within reasonable limits of course.i dont get sound after the computer was turned on from hibernateQuote from: Coogah on November 30, 2008, 12:36:51 AM

When an add-on card is installed the onboard sound will automatically be disabled.steven32collins
Please, start your own topic.Right on, sounds great. I'll just drop the few bucks and get that card so I don't have to deal with the onboard.

Thanks for your help everyone!
