Solve : Keyboard/mouse settings issues?

Answer»

Keyboard

I bought a laptop replacement in Japan, which naturally comes with a Japanese (layout) keyboard. I installed English windows XP, downloaded the east asian language support package which allows me to type in Japanese, etc. However, I am still stuck on US/English keyboard. How can I switch to Japanese keyboard? I'm trying to do it through regional LANGUAGES in the control panel, but it's not working.  Regardless if I change the typing language, or select Japanese keyboard, all keys are still US keyboard.

Mouse

I've also got a touchpad mouse (sorry i dont know the proper term) which is below the keys on the keyboard, and I can't change the settings for this.  In control panel, mouse, hardware, I find two mice - ps2 compatible mouse and logitech usb cordless mouse.  Both said to be working properly.  As far as I can tell, changing the properties (buttons, pointers, etc) affects both at the same time.  I want to disable the touchpad mouse, and keep the logitech working.  Another issue is both mice interfere with typing.  If the mouse is positioned on a typable surface in a window, it will randomly select that space shifting what I am typing.  This also occurs within the same typing window inserting what i am typing into the middle of my text.  How on EARTH do I GET rid of this!?

Check out this site: http://www.aipainunavik.com/support/e_keyboard_win.html
It's a tutorial that goes through how to go about setting up different language settings (including the keyboard settings). The instructions are for Himalayan (?) keyboards - just use some common sense and pick the approproate stuff.

Mouse:
It's just "Touchpad", not a "Touchpad Mouse". Apart from that, I can't help at all.You say you're having difficutly turning off the touchpad? Maybe when you type, your hands accidently stimulate it, causing your second problem.I've been through the whole setup procedure before.  I"ve got languages set to Japanese, but just like in the setup example on the website, there is no Japanese available under keyboard layout IME.

about the touchpad, yes, occasionally it happens that the hand brushes the touchpad, but that doesn't explain the mouse clicking onto other typable areas.
I just want to disable the touchpad altogether.
whats the make of the laptop?  maybe there are different drivers needed for the laptop mouse/keyboard...or a m$oft update patch thats needed....SUGGESTIONS....In the laptop's BIOS, disable the 'PS2 port assigned to mouse', 'Assign IRQ12 to mouse', or 'onboard pointing DEVICE' options. Then use a USB mouse or trackball.

Or you can open the case and physically unplug the ribbon cable for the glidepad. You can then still use a mouse or trackball in the PS2 port on the back of the laptop.http://greggman.com/japan/xp-ime/xp-ime.htm
