Solve : Laptop dvd/cd rom, gateway computer?

Answer»

Hey folks
I have a gatway laptop that the cd rom just decided it couldn't read anymore. I put in a cd, I can hear the eye moving, trying to read but I was sure before I could hear the motor running when the cd was spinning. Is there a way to check it out?Try using VARIOUS CDs (originals, copies, ETC.) to see if it's not just that one.It seems to be the same no matter what cd I use. I've used music cd and software install cd's. It doesn't seem to matter. Even when I go to my computer, it doesn't register that there is any cd in the drive.Your CD drive is probably bad, you may need to replace it...Completely remove the drive from the laptop.
Use a flashlight to inspect inside the drive bay for obstructions.
To clean it out use a can of compressed air. DO NOT stick any metal objects in there.
Also inspect the business end of the drive.
Remount it. Some need to be pushed in fairly firmly but don't force it.
Re- boot and see if there is any change...thank you! at least that is a definite way that I will know that it's bad or good and also LEARN something in the process. AS long as you learn something in the day, it's not been a total loss.Hi, I don't think I can help you. However, after downloading SP2, I have many problems, including my CD/DVD. I can listen to CDs and I had a picture and no sound on the DVDs. I was told to reinstall the originial driver. My picture slowed up and distorted and went blank with a "stop error" message. I followed the stop error instuctions, but all that happened was no picture at all. Sony also told me to go into BOIS and change back to default values. I did. Still not successful. Now I'm told to download any updates from the Sony website, which is numerous. Thus, I still do not have use of my DVD player. You MIGHT try cleaning it. I'm sure if you go the GATEWAY Website, you might find some useful help. If you added any hardware, there may be a conflict. Have you tried a system restore. I better do that as well. Sorry I couldn't be any more helpful, but I'm hoping that someone else will come along and give you some advise which may also help me.
Good Luck.
