Answer» I need a simple definition of layer masks. What are they? How to USE a layer mask in superimposition in Photoshop CS5? Particularly to preserve the colour, focus and transparency of a superimposed image? Stepbystep directions please as I am easily confused by computer NAVIGATIONAL intricacies. Grateful thanks. GBFirst of all, it is not a XP question. It is about the features of a Photo Editor program. The concept also applies to other image types. Any graphic or image or photo that needs complex editing can benefit from the use of layers. A mask can inhibit or enhance the layer, or some parts of a layer. And a layer can be a mask.
The learning curve for this kind of stuff is steep and has almost nothing to do with the Operating system. Besides Microsoft, Adobe and Coral make powerful image editing engines that can be USING in image editing programs.
If you are sick and tired of Adobe and its high-price collections of bloatware, you may want to take a look at the products from the competition.

I have been very pleased with Corel products and believe there are better than Adobe for the average PERSON. IMHO.Here's a nice explanation/tutorial: http://thepioneerwoman.com/photography/2009/06/layer-masks-erasing-with-impunity/
