Solve : Loading XP after Mobo change?

Answer»

I have just got back my original first PC, an EMachines 2210. When I got it home & set it up.. nothing! (it was working fine prior to this) I deduced, and got a 2nd opinion, that the mobo had died. I had an old HP board and installed that. Installed the XP emachines recovery discs, and it seemed to load up ok, but when I tried to boot it just went to 'Start Windows normally/safe mode screen' but nothing else. I understand this is due to the mobo change, and accept that. However, I have a genuine XP disc complete with prod. key, also as I purchased the PC (with rec. discs) and the prod. key still on the label on the back. Can I use the old product key to activate XP after loading from the 'new' disc? If so how? I feel I am doing nothing illegal here as I purchased both items. Thank you. 1. Correct. Follow PATIO's link.
2. I don't understand.
3. You have 2 XP product keys, 1 from the eMachines and 1 you purchased? Are they both XP-Home or is 1 Home and the other Pro?Both the same, I think, as the EMachines one uses Semantic Ghost 7.5? (but the sticker states XP home Edition) I'm assuming they are XP Home. The bought one is XP SP1 though, should this make a difference?Quote from: alexma on December 07, 2009, 06:14:05 PM

Now, I'm really confused! I know what Ghost is but what does Ghost have to do with Windows? I FIGURED the eMachine was XP-Home, but have no idea what you bought. XP-Home and XP-Professional are not the same and use different PID's.Ok, I'll try to exlain...When I booted from the rec. discs, instead of the usual Win XP set up, the screen shows that install is proceeding but at the top it states 'Symantic Ghost 7.5' and installs XP in 8 minutes with a PROGRESS bar that stops at 50% &asks for the next disc. I have installed a formatted 320 gb IDE Hdd. (Forgot to mention that in the original post Sorry)Quote from: alexma on December 07, 2009, 06:34:53 PM

1. That's how the Recovery process works. The original installation is saved as a Ghost image on the hidden partition. The Recovery disk is able to access that image for the restore. I use Ghost 7.0 EVERY week, I know all about it.
2. Is the new 320GB replacing the old HDD? If so, use the new XP CD. If you bought it as SP1 and you have a valid PID, you will have to download or Windows Update SP3, but that won't work until you do #3 below.
3. You will need all the drivers for the HP motherboard. Download them now, you will need them, whatever you do.Thanks for that. But I want to use the 'old' Product Key that came with the PC, rather than the one on my XP SP1 disc, as I have this earmarked for another project. Thus, can I load XP from the XP disc I have, but activate it with the 'old' product key?No
Each product key is tied to a type of XP distribution.
Examples:
Retail XP Home
Retail XP Pro
Dell OEM XP Home
Dell OEM XP
HP OEM XP Home
HP OEM XP Pro
Enterprise XP Pro for for Taco Bell
Vioume License XP for City of San Mateo
And so on.
The CDs are almost identical. It is the same system. But a very small difference makes it impossible to use a product key of one to be used in another distribution.
Why? Ask Microsoft.
