Answer» well i really did it this TIME I;am very new to computers but old in age heres my story I bought a refurbished dell optiplex110 from heartlandamerica online and somehow i've made it where i can only log on as an user when i try to go to settings contolpanel users it will not let me change my use .now i can;t download or make any adjustments to my own computer!!!!!! any suggestions? keitheppard..... Can you remember what you did when you created the user account ...... did you give yourself limited or administrative privledges ?
Did you have a password set on the admin account ?
dl65 no i don;t remember setting a password on administrator :-? and i probably did give my self limited access keitheppard..... Try GOING into safe mode ....then go to control panel ....and click on users ....... then choose Admin and see if you can get in .
To get into safe mode ...... shutdown and then restart ....... repeatedly tap the F8 key untill you see a screen offering you various ways of starting ....select safe mode ........ Once it loads and you see the word safe in the 4 corners and your icons load ....go into the control panel
dl65 i went in to safe mode when the windows program starts it will only let me logon my name and my password and logs me in as a user when i go to control panel it won't let me in because it says i am logon as user onlyWhat if you log on as Administrator (with a capitol A) and leave the password field blank?
Or contact the company you got it from and see how they load the administrator account. They may have a generic password for all of their machines. This seemed to work for another poster. http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=305What a secure operating system! There are several standalone "password revealers" available for XP. I use one in particular which reveals all passwords that are on the system. Backdated....Would you care to share the name with us ?
dl65 Is it WISE to do so on a public forum? I'll PM the info if you like.Is it a secret? It's no secret but it can be dangerous in the wrong hands. I think for the SAKE of security this sort of thing shouldn't be broadcast on such a forum. If I was a responsible parent who'd secured the system, I'd be more than annoyed to find that little Johnny and his mates can now SURF the *censored* sites at will because of something he'd discovered here.
