I can no LONGER access the internet or any files from my Compaq laptop. I have no desktop icons after startup and if I click the start button to access any programs nothing happens. I do have access to some functions in the start menu just not all. Thanks for any and all HELP! I am running Windows XP.What happened prior to all of this? Can you do a system restore to a time before this happened? WHat spyware/adware/virus protections is in place? Any playing around with the SETTINGS? Do you have a reall Windows CD if that is needed? The same thing happened to a coworker of mine.  The cause: A virus deleted his user account and created a new account with the same name.

To verify this has not happened to you, check the folders in the DOCUMENTS and Settings folder.  Do you see two folders with your user name (one with your user name and one with the name of the computer followed by a period and your user name)?  For example, if your computer name is Flintstone and your user name is Fred do you see one folder named Fred and one named Fred.Flinstone in the Documents and Settings folder?
